2024 LIC Lunar New Year Celebration Launch and Networking Night at Red Sorghum Recap


On January 31, we launched our LIC Lunar New Year Celebration at Red Sorghum featuring Hunan & Szechuan cuisine and a baijiu cocktail demo, speeches from Council Member Julie Won, NYC Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Kevin Kim and New York Chinese Cultural Center Executive Director Ying Yen. The launch concluded with a water sleeve performance, lion dance and blessing of nearby businesses. View photos here.

Fun Ways to Celebrate the Lunar New Year in Long Island City - NBC's New York Live

Governor Hochul Announces LIC Will Receive $10M in Funding as the NYC Regional Winner of the DRI Award

Governor Hochul recently announced Long Island City's successful selection for the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) award, securing a significant $10 million in state investment for economic and community development projects. LICP is honored to have submitted the DRI application on behalf of the neighborhood and looks forward to collaborating with local officials and local partners to enhance the community.

Saturday, Feb. 10, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. - Join BOUT Boxing for a day of Lunar New Year celebration classes. In the spirit of the holiday, wear red to classes at 9,10 and 11 a.m., and stick around post-workout for red envelopes with deals inside and Lunar New Year-inspired treats. Details


Saturday, Feb. 10, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. - At City Chemist, indulge in the Lunar New Year festivities. Receive red envelopes filled with surprises like a "free gift" or "20% off your next purchase" when you make a purchase of $75 or more. Details


Saturday, Feb. 10, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. - Join the LIC YMCA to learn about summer camp for your child from camp staff. There will be Lunar New Year-themed activities, tours and excitement for camp. Details


Saturday, Feb. 10, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. - To honor the Year of the Dragon, Mexology offers Dragonfruit Agua Fresca as the daily Agua Fresca on Lunar New Year. Details


Saturday, Feb. 10, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. - Celebrate Lunar New Year with Little Banchan Shop. On February 10 (in-store only), enjoy $5 pints of traditional Korean rice cake soup (tteok guk). Details


Saturday, Feb. 10, 12 p.m.-1 a.m. - To celebrate Lunar New Year, Finback Brewery will host a party at its new Long Island City location for its annual release of Golden Lucky, a pilsner brewed with coconut and kumquat. Details

Legends of LIC - "SONAM on Van Dam"

"Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita co-founded a rag-tag Japanese company whose first effort was to miserably fail at making rice cookers in the ruins of post-war Japan. Ibuka, after doing research, had an opportunity to secure the licensing of transistor technology in the mid-1950s. The transistor, outside of military applications, was primarily used for hearing aids.


In 1955, using transistors, they manufactured the first pocket-sized radio and renamed themselves Sony (homophonic ‘Sounds Nice’) Corporation. After going international, they leased in 1960 a warehouse building on Van Dam Street, in Long Island City, where they created Sony Corporation of America (informally dubbed ‘SONAM.’"
