Dr. Ruby’s Healing Life

What “living food” actually means.

We hear a lot about superfoods and supplements, powders and protocols. The simplest thing often gets skipped, and that is food that is still alive.

A raw almond can be planted and it will grow. Roast it, and it will not. A fresh spinach leaf, a ripe mango, and a handful of sprouts are all still carrying the water, the fiber, and the full set of nutrients the plant made. That is what I mean by living food. It comes to you the way nature finished it, before heat or a factory got involved.

Here is why it matters. Some of the most fragile nutrients in our food are the ones that do not survive high heat. Vitamin C, folate, and many of the delicate plant compounds begin to fade the longer and hotter we cook. When you eat more of your food raw, you take those in at full strength, along with all of the water and fiber the plant still holds. That combination is why a day of living foods leaves you feeling light and clean instead of heavy and slow.

I learned the power of living foods during the most important fight of my life. When I was healing my body from cancer, my refrigerator went through a complete transformation. It went from nearly empty except for a freezer stacked with frozen dinners, to looking like a farmers market, overflowing with fresh fruits, vegetables, and greens. I still ate some cooked food, but I leaned heavily into raw, living foods, and my body responded. The science backs this up. A major review published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention looked at raw versus cooked vegetables across dozens of studies, and found that raw vegetables were the most consistently linked to a lower risk of cancer.

To be clear, raw is not about perfection, and it is not about doing it forever. Some foods are actually better for you cooked, and a warm meal has its place, especially as the weather turns. What I am talking about is tipping the balance. Most of us eat almost nothing in its living form, and even a short season of eating mostly raw changes how the body feels within days. Your energy increases instead of crashing in the afternoon. Your skin looks clearer. For so long, you have carried a heaviness you stopped even questioning. It starts to lift, and you remember what light feels like.

That is exactly why I am doing this now, heading into the busiest eating season of the year. I would rather reset before the holidays than try to repair after them.

So let’s do it together. On Monday, October 19, I am hosting a 30-Day Raw Challenge inside my Healing Community, and it runs through November 17. You get to pick your level. You can go all in with me and eat fully raw, or you can follow a structured 80 percent raw plan that is mostly living foods with some cooked beans and whole grains worked in, so it stays doable and satisfying. Either way, you get a full menu plan and shopping lists built for your track, so there is no guesswork and no doing it alone. Sign up now so you receive the menu plan, the shopping lists, and the daily instructions ahead of time, and you can kick things off right alongside us on October 19.

And here is my gift to you. The Healing Community just turned one, and to celebrate, I have dropped the price for a limited time. Monthly is now $19, down from $29, and yearly is now $190, down from $300. This is the lowest price I have ever offered, and it ends October 31. Lock it in, join us before the 19th, and walk into the holidays feeling like yourself again.

In case you think 30 days of raw food sounds like 30 days of sad salads, let me show you something. Yes, this is a dessert. Yes, it is on the plan.

Raw Brownie Pops

Five ingredients, ten minutes, no oven required.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups walnuts
  • 1 cup Medjool dates, pitted and chopped
  • 1/4 cup raw cacao powder
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or raw agave
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Place the walnuts in a large food processor fitted with a standard blade. Pulse several times until they break down into small crumbles.
  2. Add the chopped dates, cacao powder, maple syrup or agave, vanilla, and salt. Process until well combined and the mixture begins to clump, about 30 to 35 seconds.
  3. Lightly wet your hands with water, then scoop up about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the dough at a time and roll it into a firm ball. Repeat until all of the bites are made. Rinse and lightly rewet your hands halfway through if needed.
  4. Enjoy right away, or chill them first. Extra bites keep in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

A tip: Chop the dates after you remove the pits. It helps them break down smoothly in the processor instead of clumping and sticking.

This is what the challenge looks like. Real food, real flavor, and treats you never have to feel guilty about. Come find out what living food can do.
