MOTORIZED CHAIN
ACTUATORS FOR NIGHT FLUSH COOLING IN BUILDINGS
Sometimes called night flushing or night purging, night cooling is a strategy that uses the natural fall in temperature that occurs overnight to maximize the efficiency of a building's ventilation, refreshing internal spaces ready for the next day.
The night purge incorporates a cooling strategy that removes stale night air to cool down the building's thermal mass. Thermal buoyancy allows denser, colder air to lift warmer, stale air from the building.
The concept is hardly new. Over a millennium ago Middle Eastern cooling towers (wind scoops) caught night breezes and were used in conjunction with cisterns to perform a rudimentary night flush.
Night purge ventilation is useful when daytime air temperatures are so high that bringing unconditioned air into the building would not cool people down, but where night air is cool or cold. This strategy can provide passive ventilation in weather that might normally be considered too hot for it.
The inclusion of wind and rain sensors can also be integrated into to the BMS to control vents for prevailing weather conditions when the building is unattended.
Security is sometimes a common concern when night purging is considered. This concern is alleviated by the fact that the windows are not required to open completely during night purging. The actuators will only open the windows or louvres a small amount, lowering the risk of intrusion.
Even in areas where winter conditions negate the efficacy of night flush, the practice can still provide passive cooling during hotter months reducing mechanical cooling costs and wear and tear on HVAC systems.
