March's Artist of the Month
During the month of March, the Jo Ann C. Smith Gallery Hall at the Pleasant Valley Free Library will host an exhibit of paintings, sketches, and drawings by its namesake.
The works will all feature local scenes. These were mostly painted from photos that Jo Ann took herself. A few are her own creations with a theme related to the area. Pleasant Valley and Poughkeepsie are the most frequent towns depicted. There are also scenes from the neighboring areas of Hyde park, Rhinebeck, Millbrook, and Stanford.
Jo Ann was a self taught artist who also raised three children, worked as a teacher's aide for developmentally disabled children, and volunteered many hours at the Pleasant Valley Library. She still found time to create thousands of works of art from hand drawn greeting cards to large scale wall murals.
We are always looking for new artists who want to display their work in the Library! Please email programs@pvlibrary.org for more information.

Keepers of the Light: Women Lighthouse Keepers of the Hudson River -
a Special Virtual Presentation
Wednesday, March 12th @ 6pm
| |
|
Women have kept the lights since the earliest days of the Hudson River lighthouses. Starting in the 1830s until automation in the 1950s, nearly a dozen women were official lighthouse keepers on the Hudson River, several with careers of over forty years. Others were unjustly turned out from their posts. Some weren’t official keepers at all, but did the duties nonetheless. The Hudson River Maritime Museum will present about the careers and personal lives of these female keepers, what it took to be a lighthouse keeper, and why the Hudson River had more women lighthouse keepers than most places in the United States.
Sponsored by Dutchess County Library Association, this special virtual program will be screened at the Pleasant Valley Library on Wednesday, March 12th. If you would like to watch the presentation here at the Library, please register here. Space is limited.
If you would rather watch this presentation from home, please click here to sign up to receive the Zoom link by email.

St. Patrick's Day Tunes & All Things Irish: Cello Concert w/ Alex Prizgintas
Saturday, March 15th @ 2pm
| |
|
What an exciting way to celebrate Irish spirits and all things green! The unique sound of Alex Prizgintas’ electrified cello includes reels and jigs along with gigues and traditional Irish tunes. It features a hit from the Irish rock Group U2, “With or Without You,” signatures from Bing Crosby such as “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” and the beautiful hymn “Be Thou My Vision."
Classically trained, Alex employs non-classical tools like distortion, delay, and the iconic "wah-wah" guitar pedals of rock bands - all in conjunction with a looping station to craft his own wall-to-wall sound through his 1,000 watt amp. Accompanied with a narration that reveals some of the back stories of the songs, he immerses his audience in a journey through musical history.
