Strong women. May we know them. May we raise them. This #WomensHistoryMonth, we recognize the little moments that make a BIG impact, and the women who make it all possible. It takes a village to empower the next generation of community changemakers.

MEET BIG SISTER PIPER

(MATCHED WITH LITTLE SISTER SOREN FOR 16 MONTHS

IN CABARRUS HIGH SCHOOL BIGS PROGRAM)

Why do you enjoy the Big Brothers Big Sisters program?

I genuinely enjoy being a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters because it allows me to support my Little Sister’s growth academically, socially, and emotionally. While it hasn’t always been easy, we have grown tremendously since we first met, and it has been an enriching experience.

Why does your match work so well?

My Little and I are somewhat different, but over time, I've realized that these differences make our match so unique. She helps me see things from new perspectives, just as I help her see things differently. Our unique qualities complement each other in ways that strengthen our connection.

What has been the most memorable moment in your match?

Each month, after gym days, we dedicate time to reading—a task my Little initially despised due to her lack of interest in books. One day, after much persuasion, she agreed to try a new book. She ended up enjoying it immensely, realizing that exploring new activities—be it games, crafts, or books—could be more enjoyable than she expected. We still reminisce about that moment often!

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO

Hello Big Brothers and Big Sisters!

Spring is almost here!

March is Women’s History Month! A great time for both Big Brothers and Big Sisters to share the stories of women, past and present, who helped change the world.

Trips to the library, museum, or special events can be a meaningful way to celebrate together. For our Little Brothers, these outings provide a wonderful opportunity to express appreciation for their mom or other influential women in their lives—whether it's a teacher, grandmother, foster mother, aunt, or caretaker. Engaging in a creative activity, such as making a card, crafting an art project, or writing a poem, can be a fun and heartfelt way to show gratitude throughout the month.

Big Sisters, March is the perfect time to lead by example and uplift your Little Sister. Use this opportunity to inspire her, reminding her that she can achieve anything she sets her mind to. It’s a great time to reinforce her hopes, dreams, and plans for a bright future. Words of affirmation can play a powerful role in building confidence, self-respect, and self-love. You can bring this encouragement to life through vision boards, journaling, or exchanging notes of appreciation and support. Recently, I had a conversation with my Little Sister, Kai, about creating a roadmap for her future, and she was thrilled! We plan to bring it to life with pictures, key dates, and milestones to help her visualize her journey ahead. Kai is 13, and it’s a great reminder that it’s never too early or too late to start planning for the future.

I hope you all enjoy the vibrant colors of spring! Take time to experience what I like to call "talk walks" in the park—unhurried strolls where you can witness the trees coming back to life, flowers blooming, and the energy of the season all around you.

Yours in Service to Youth,

Donna Dunlap

Matches in our High School Bigs program, at Rama Road Elementary, celebrated the school’s annual College Week event. The Littles learned about the variety of colleges and universities, including HBCUs, completed a child-friendly college application and ended by taking a graduation picture to commemorate the day. It was an educational and impactful experience for the Littles. Little Sister Zionnah said “I want to go to college now” which topped off the event.

HORNET'S DRIBBLE & DESIGN EVENT!

Last month, matches attended a game courtesy of the Charlotte Hornets! Our Bigs and Littles also had the chance to see our BBBSCC basketball on display at the Spectrum Center as part of the Dribble & Design for a Cause campaign. Don’t forget—voting is still open! In February, our matches attended an Art Night sponsored by the Arts Empowerment Project. Lead artist, Brenda, provided a step by step lesson on how to make Valentine’s Day conversation hearts, made of baked clay.

Matches also created greeting cards to give to loved ones.

Thank you TAEP for sponsoring our matches!

Last month in Beyond School Walls, Littles explored the fundamentals of financial literacy alongside their Bigs. They were introduced to key concepts like budgeting, saving, and the challenges of making smart financial choices. Through the interactive "Bean Game," Littles were given a set number of beans to "spend" throughout the month, facing real-life scenarios like unexpected car trouble or hospital bills. This hands-on activity helped them grasp the importance of planning ahead and making thoughtful financial decisions in a fun and engaging way.
