How Will You Engage in Our Community?
Last Saturday, October 24th, our district’s education association, CREA, and CRCSD hosted a Trunk or Treat event at Kingston Stadium. Individual schools, departments, and clubs/organizations hosted decorated trunks—even a haunted school bus—for kids to stop by and enjoy festivities and treats. Over 1,300 people joined us that beautiful afternoon!! We were thrilled to see so many kids and families; it was an absolute testament to community engagement. Thank you to all staff members, students, and families who made this event such a great success!

There are continued opportunities for community engagement. Our district is hosting the 5A football playoff game between our very own Kennedy High School and Dubuque Senior Friday night! If you’re up for a road trip on Friday, Washington High School is playing Waverly-Shell Rock. As the seasons change from fall to winter activities, there will be more events for everyone to enjoy.

Additionally, as mentioned last week, conference season and family engagement conversations are a great means to connect with teachers, staff members, and bridge school to home communication. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

When considering community engagement from an even bigger perspective, next week is a big week for our community and our state. Elections are on Tuesday, November 2, and all registered voters have an opportunity to engage in the civic act of voting. This is just a reminder to get out and vote!

Wishing you all a Happy and Safe Halloween weekend.

Harding Students Explore Their Futures at Career Day

Harding Middle School students took a break from their regular school day to learn about career opportunities from several community members.

“Career Day gives middle schoolers exposure to a variety of careers that they’re not normally exposed to or know about,” explained Jen Novotny, sixth grade counselor at Harding. “At the middle school level, it’s all about exposure."

National Principals Month: Ernie Cox

CRCSD celebrates National Principals Month with a look at a school administrator that works with both in-person and virtual students, Ernie Cox.

Cox joined CRCSD in the 2020-21 school year as principal of Madison Elementary School. The following year, he added the role of Cedar Rapids Virtual Academy's first principal to his duties.

"At CRVA, we are busy trying a lot of new things and connecting with families to serve them in a different way," says Cox.

Thank you and all of our administrators for the essential work you put in each day to make a school a wonderful place!
