McCaysville Flooding Relief Efforts -

Ways You Can Help

Overview of this Natural Disaster

This week McCaysville, GA and neighboring Copperhill,TN experienced catastrophic flash flooding from torrential rain that caused the Toccoa River to crest at record levels and triggered a state of emergency. The total rainfall was estimated between 5 and 11 inches, and it caused widespread evacuations and perilous rescue efforts. Floodwaters rose above the rooftops in some areas, with mud, debris and washed-out bridges complicating rescue operations. Officials described this event as the worst flooding since 1990.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for Fannin County and surrounding areas. Between 50 and 80 people were rescued by swift-water teams using boats and rafts. US Army Rangers assisted with aerial searches, with participation by multiple agencies from Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. McCaysville was closed to unauthorized personnel, and curfews and boil-water advisories were issued.

Homes, businesses, vehicles and infrastructure suffered severe destruction. Residents reported water rushing into homes, destroying interiors and leaving debris everywhere. Several buildings caught fire due to lightning and a reported propane tank explosion. One firefighter was injured. The city's water system failed, requiring bottled water distribution. Many residences lost vehicles, pets and personal belongings, and shelters were opened in nearby Blue Ridge. The Toccoa River reached the major flood stage, cresting over 18 feet--well above the 14 ft major flood threshold.

Here's the status as of Friday afternoon: This flood event stands as one of the most destructive in McCaysville's recent history, requiring long-term recovery and infrastructure repair. Cleanup and recovery efforts are ongoing, with local businesses and community organizations coordinating well.
