Mary Stewart Announces Her Retirement

After nearly two decades of morning announcements, hallway high-fives, and unforgettable pep rallies, Principal Mary Stewart is preparing to turn the page on a legendary chapter at Wyandotte High School.


Stewart has announced her retirement after serving as principal at Wyandotte High School for 18 incredible years.


She will be best remembered for her signature smile, unwavering support for her students, and a deep commitment to the Kansas City, Kansas community.

The Kansas City, Kansas community is invited to an Open House Retirement Reception to help bid farewell to Principal Stewart.


Please join Principal Stewart on Saturday, May 10, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., at Wyandotte High School, located at 2501 Minnesota Ave.

Currently, he serves as the Director of Transportation, a position he has excelled for the past seven years.


Under his leadership, the transportation department has become a model of efficiency and reliability, achieving full staffing for several consecutive years-- a testament to his exceptional management and leadership skills.

A graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, Mr. Hansford’s return to the area represents a meaningful full-circle moment in his professional journey.

Yes She Can! Conference Honors KCKPS Deputy Superintendent

Dr. Judith Campbell

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Dr. Judith Campbell was recently celebrated for her dedication to education at the annual Yes She Can! Conference.


On Saturday, March 1, Dr. Campbell was recognized for her 26 years of service in education at the conference held at Central Office. The event honors women who have made impactful contributions in their fields.

 

As an educator, Dr. Campbell exemplifies a passion for learning and a commitment to shaping young minds. Throughout the course of her career, she has served as a principal, administrator, and mentor.

Are You Faster Than a Fifth Grader?

It's time for an annual tradition at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools!


The Are You Faster Than a Fifth Grader fun run will take place on Friday, May 9 at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Fieldhouse, located 7250 State Ave. in KCK.


Dozens of students will compete against KCKPS Superintendent Dr. Anna Stubblefield to see who is the fastest in the 2-mile race.


As a reminder, several side streets between 72nd and Parallel Pkwy and 72nd and Leavenworth Rd. will be closed for approximately one-hour.

KCKPS Holds Design Challenge for Heritage Students

In an effort to amplify student voices and honor their identities, the Diploma+ College and Career Instructional Program at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools held a special social media challenge. 


On Wednesday, April 2, more than 70 students from J.C. Harmon High School came together to compete in an aspiring Client Connected Project at Central Office. It was a collaborative event to showcase their talent, creativity, and passion. 

 

The unique Design Challenge was a partnership between the CAPS Program and the Latinx Education Collaborative (LEC) of Kansas City, Missouri.

Washington High School Track Team Receives $15,000 Grant

It’s springtime, and track season is finally upon us.


When the Washington High School boys’ and girls’ track team hit the field, they will be running in style.


Thanks to a special grant program, the team received brand new uniforms and equipment, totaling more than $15,000.

 

The team received new shoes, shorts, tops, sports bras, track equipment, and a $1,000 financial award.

Carl B. Bruce Middle School’s JAG-K Students Soar to Victory

as State Champions

Students in the JAG-K (Jobs for American Graduates) class at Carl B. Bruce Middle School are floating on cloud-nine after an impressive win.

 

On Wednesday, April 9, this group of incredibly talented and driven students took home the title of state champions at the JAG-K Development Conference, held at the Cosmosphere International Space Museum in Hutchinson, Kansas.


This year’s theme centered around space exploration and challenged students to think beyond the atmosphere in four different categories, including Lunar Lander, Career/Business Poster, Rocket Launch, and Moon Community.

SPED Leaders at KCKPS Host the 2025 Wyandotte County Job Olympics

Thunderous applause and loud cheering erupted inside the giant auditorium of Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.


The sound reverberating in the building wasn’t a championship wrestling match or concert-- it was something much more meaningful and profound.


On Thursday, April 16, the historic venue traded in the old echoes of wrestling legends like Bulldog Bob Brown and Hansom Harley Race for an awe inspiring competition. 


The stage was set for the Wyandotte County Job Olympics, hosted the Special Education Department at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.

Lauren Sage: Region 3 Finalist for the 2026 Kansas Teacher of the Year

F.L. Schlagle High School biology and environmental science teacher Lauren Sage has been named a Region 3 finalist for the prestigious 2026 Kansas Teacher of the Year (KTOY) award.


Sage received the exciting news on Sunday, April 6, at the KTOY Regions 3 awards banquet, held at the Overland Park Hotel in Overland Park.

 

This nomination marks a significant milestone in Sage’s career, recognizing her outstanding contribution to education.

Arrowhead Middle School Principal Lawrence Smith

Earns Spot in the NFL

Arrowhead Middle School Principal, Lawrence Smith has been selected as a National Football League (NFL) referee for the upcoming 2025 season.

 

Smith’s journey to this remarkable achievement began when he received the official announcement in early March after undergoing an extensive selection process, including a background check with the FBI.

 

He didn’t think the opportunity would ever happen, so when he finally got the call, his dream of becoming an NFL official became a reality.


“It’s a huge honor and a testament to years of hard work and dedication,” he shared. Becoming an NFL official is not only a dream come true but a chance to be part of the most prestigious sports leagues in the world.”

Free Summer Meal Program Will be Available for Students

Free meals will be available this summer through KCKPS-affiliated community sites for individuals 18 and under.

 

Sites include Beatrice Lee (JFK) Community Center at 1310 N. 10th St, open from June 24 to July 26, offering breakfast from 8:30–9:30 AM and lunch from 11:00 AM–12:30 PM.

 

Parkwood Pool at 950 Quindaro Blvd. will serve snacks from 12:55–5:00 PM and dinner from 3:00–4:05 PM during the same dates.

 

Eisenhower Community Center at 2901 N. 72nd St will operate from June 10 to July 26, serving breakfast from 8:30–9:30 AM and lunch from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM.

Closures Underway for I-670 and Central Avenue Bridge Repairs

Traffic Alert: The Kansas Department of Transportation (DOT) has begun a bridge maintenance project on I-670 and Central Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.


The project will include girder repairs, expansion joint replacements, and bridge deck patching.


Motorists can expect lane and ramp closures.


The project began on April 23rd and is expected to be completed by late September.

UG Transit Awarded $60K for Revitalization of

7th & Minnesota Ave. Transit Hub

The Unified Government is happy to announce that the 7th and Minnesota Avenue Transit Hub will get a much-needed facelift.


A $60,000 grant has been awarded that will allow crews to significantly enhance the transit hub, transforming it into a more functional, inclusive, and inspiring space for riders.


This revitalization directly addresses the hub’s outdated infrastructure and lack of aesthetic appeal by introducing artistically designed seating, a culturally reflective mural, and essential amenities like bike racks.


The UG Transportation Department is one of five recipients of the GM on Main Street Grant. It is powered by General Motors and Main Street America.

10th & Grandview Roundabout Open House

You're invited to a come-and-go open house hosted by the UG Public Works Department to learn more about an upcoming intersection improvement project at 10th and Grandview Blvd.


The open house will take place Tuesday, May 6, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at M.E. Pearson Elementary School.


The project will replace the existing traffic signal with a new roundabout designed to enhance safety and improve traffic flow for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
