A note from Dr. Means

As another school year comes to a close, it’s a perfect time for us to reflect on the positive impact that Wauwatosa School District is having on our students’ education. Our students are excelling in various domains–in the classroom, in the arts, in athletic and academic competitions–the list goes on and is evident in the incredible stories they share. While this busy time of year moves quickly, I hope we can all take a moment to pause and realize: We have a lot to be proud of as a school community.

I also would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support and partnership of our students, staff, parents, guardians, and community members. Together, we have navigated challenges and celebrated many achievements in the 2024-25 school year, all while fostering a positive learning environment for our students. As we look forward to the future, I am eager to continue to collaborate and strive toward creating an even brighter future for our students, because when we work together toward a common goal, it makes all the difference.

As we prepared for the next school year, our theme has been established. The 2025-2026 school year theme is, “Every student. Every story. Our priority.” This theme resonates with me because it means each individual student's needs should not be ignored or overlooked. The theme means that equity continues to be central to what we do as a District. Every story indicates that our students are uniquely different, and we celebrate the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and aspirations of our students and families. Finally, the theme means that our priority is to cultivate a professional culture of care and responsiveness for every student. Our policies and allocation of resources are designed to serve all students.

Our district’s commitment to educational equity is unwavering. The theme also emphasizes that the district sees, hears, and values every student as a whole person. It commits the entire school community to nurture, support, and empower each learner, recognizing that their individual stories matter—and that helping them thrive is the district’s top priority.

Thank you for being an integral part of our community.

Our graduating class of 2025 earned an incredible $5,005,982 in total scholarships! This amazing accomplishment is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and perseverance of our amazing students, and we wish them all the best as they embark on their exciting new journeys!

Secondary School Ad Hoc Committee update

Our Secondary School Ad Hoc Committee kicked off on May 13 with its first official meeting. Members have since been diligently reviewing the district's Longterm Facilities Plan and Analysis of Learning Spaces report. Additionally, committee members toured the four secondary schools in the Wauwatosa School District.

Next, the Secondary School Ad Hoc Committee members will be visiting new and/or renovated secondary schools elsewhere in the state of Wisconsin to gain a perspective of future possibilities for Wauwatosa School District's secondary schools.

All Secondary School Ad Hoc Committee meetings are open to the public.

2024 Referendum update

A few of the exterior louver vents and loading dock to be improved at Madison Elementary School

Each month, we will be providing an update to the design and construction progress of the 2024 referendum on the district's 2024 Referendum web page.

These updates will provide an overview of recently completed work and next steps. All monthly updates will also be archived on the site to provide a transparent timeline of progress.

MAY 2025

Recently completed work:

As progress continues on both Phase 1 and Phase 2 project planning, work in May focused primarily on detailed cost estimating and confirming design scope.

Cost estimates for Phase 1 have now been finalized, bringing us one step closer to construction kickoff this fall. Cost estimating for Phase 2 also continued this month and will carry on into the summer to ensure alignment with budget expectations.

In addition, the architectural team at PRA continued meeting with school principals to review and confirm project scopes at each building, helping refine design priorities ahead of the next phase.

Next steps:

  • Finalize Phase 2 cost estimates
  • Continue Design Development
  • Prepare for bidding out Phase 1 documents
