The updates that will be made gradually over 2026 and are in response to recommendations or feedback from the global IDDSI community, new evidence or practice information/reports that has come to light. Our goal continues to ensure our resources are current, clear, easy to access and evidence-based.
An example of why we are “refreshing our documents” relates to our March 2026 feature article on Bread as a Choking risk. In this article, Dr. Julie Cichero outlined that …The Coroner found that the term ‘gelled’ was not defined and is therefore open to interpretation. The inquest demonstrated a general misunderstanding by staff about what actually constitutes gelled bread and how it is appropriately prepared. The Coroner further queried whether gelled bread ought to be removed as a permissible food as part of a minced and moist diet. The IDDSI Board of Directors reviewed the Coronial Investigation Report from Australia very carefully and agreed to remove the term “pre-gelled or soaked breads” from the relevant IDDSI documents and resource materials.
To ensure everyone in the global community is made aware of any changes and “refreshes”, we will be communicating in a number of ways including:
So keep watching, stay current, and be sure to spread the word to your colleagues...
