MAYOR'S UPDATE

From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin

Last week, I hosted the Project MOVER pilot E-bikeshare ribbon cutting in the Village.

This pilot program, aimed at promoting sustainable and affordable transportation, has wrapped up its first full month of operation in the Village of Ossining with great success thanks to the support from NYSERDA's Clean Transportation Prizes program and the dedicated efforts of the Project MOVER partners.

Launched on August 26, the pilot project deployed 50 fully electric bicycles across 11 stations throughout the village. The bikes provide a low-cost micromobility option to users, providing a new way to access transportation, parks, public services, and retail hubs. Trips cost just $1 to unlock a bike and $0.12 per minute of use.

In just over a month, 763 people have registered through the official pilot Project MOVER app, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Between August and September, 386 unique users completed 737 trips, covering a total of 992 miles in 15,470 minutes of riding – all while burning 154k calories! On average, riders traveled 1.34 miles per trip. Riders also reported a 95.06% satisfaction rate on their trips – indicating that this program is effective and enjoyable.

The most popular destinations so far include Nelson Park, the Metro North Plaza, and the Arcadian Shopping Center – with substantial ridership for each of the 11 locations.

The operations team, conducted in partnership with Shared Mobility Inc. and Drop Mobility, hired two dedicated Ossining natives, each bringing their local expertise, Spanish language skills, and bicycling passion to this system.

In just one month, Project MOVER pilot E-bikeshare has already made a significant impact in the Village of Ossining, providing affordable, sustainable transportation and fostering community engagement. With strong initial ridership, high satisfaction rates, and the support of local partners, the program is well on its way to becoming a vital transportation resource for the Village.

Note: The e-bikes will be removed before the winter season and placed back prior to Spring.

The 2024 election season is upon us. I am proud that so many of our community members are passionate about who they will support in the upcoming elections and how folks on all sides work to bring attention to their candidates. As part of this crucial awareness-raising effort, the placement of lawn signs on private property plays a significant role. However, lawn signs within various Ossining neighborhoods have gone missing.

It is important to note that removing political signage from private property is illegal under the NYS Fair Campaign Code in the Board of Elections regulations § 6201.1 (click here for more info: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/ELN/3-106).

While it's true that lawn signs don't directly elect candidates, they do serve a crucial role in the election process. They help raise awareness and show support, making them an essential part of our democratic system.

Everyone is entitled to their political opinions - and as the election season heats up, it is essential to be active and respectful to our neighbors, fostering a community of diverse but respectful political discourse.

Early voting for the upcoming crucial elections begins next Saturday! This is a nine (9) day period where your vote can make a difference, allowing you to vote in person before Election Day in Westchester County. You can do so in Ossining at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center at 95 Broadway.
