The One Thing!

The 5-Minute Financial Fee Audit

A quiet drag on investment accounts can add up over time—the key is translating small percentages into nominal dollar numbers.

An actionable, educational step you can take today is to look at your retirement account statements, find the Expense Ratio (the annual fee) of your primary investment holdings, and evaluate its long-term impact.

We often assume a fee of 1%, 1.5%, or even 0.5% is negligible. However, the power of compound interest works both ways: it can exponentially build wealth, or internal fees can compound quietly against your total return.

Consider this hypothetical illustration: If an investor saves $500 a month for 30 years and earns a steady 8% nominal annual return compounded monthly, the account could hypothetically grow to roughly $745,000. If a 1% fee reduces that net steady return to 7%, the final balance drops closer to $610,000.

In this scenario, that seemingly small 1% fee didn't just cost 1% of the principal; it reduced the hypothetical ending balance by $135,000 in nominal dollars—consuming a significant portion of the wealth-building potential due to the lost capacity of compounding.

Take 5 minutes today to check your percentages. Evaluating your portfolio’s internal costs and exploring whether lower-cost investment alternatives fit your risk capacity is a small exercise that could significantly protect your net financial trajectory over your lifetime.
