Alone, but Not Lonely
By Rabbi Yossy Goldman, emissary of the Rebbe in Johannesburg, South Africa; art by Sefira Lightstone

Isn’t it incredible how King Solomon’s ancient words “There is nothing new under the sun” still hold true? I find it absolutely fascinating that statements in this week’s Torah reading still hold true over 3,000 years later.
It’s the story of Balaam, the powerful heathen prophet who attempts to curse our ancestors at the behest of King Balak of Moab. But, try as he might, Balaam’s attempts fail dismally. G‑d is clearly controlling him, and against his own wishes, he blesses the people instead of cursing them. Balak is exasperated, Balaam is frustrated, and he returns home a failure.

Rabbi Yoseph-Yitzchak Schneersohn- [often referred to as the Rebbe Rayatz] was born in Lubavitch, Russia, on the twelfth day of the Jewish month of Tammuz 5640 (1880). In 1920 he became the sixth Rebbe of the Schneersohn dynasty, founded one hundred fifty years before by his ancestor, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad Chassidism, whose descendants formed an unbroken chain of great leaders, scholars and thinkers.
Yoseph Yitzchak was barely fifteen years old when his illustrious father, Rabbi Shalom Dov-Ber Schneersohn, the fifth Rebbe in the Chabad dynasty, appointed him his personal secretary and initiated him into the vortex of religious, communal, political and scholarly activities that revolve around the world leader of the Chabad movement. For, ever since the invasion of Russia by Napoleon, when Rabbi Schneur Zalman and his followers had rendered valuable support to the Russian cause, the Lubavitcher Rabbis enjoyed the status of privileged citizens.

A Ruler Shall Go Forth
Adapted by Rabbi Sholom Ber Wineberg from a talk of the Lubavitcher Rebbe - Likutei Sichos, Balak 5751, pp. 8-10. Taken from The Chassidic Dimension, published by SIE

One of the prophecies of Billam recorded in the Torah portion of Balak is that “a ruler shall go forth from Yaakov.”Rashi explains that this refers to Moshiach, concerning whom the verse adds:3 “he shall rule from sea to sea, and from the river to the end of the earth.”
Since the obvious intent of the verse is that Moshiach will rule the entire world, why doesn’t it simply say so? Moreover, why is it necessary to state “from sea to sea” when Moshiach’s primary dominion will be over the land masses and their inhabitants?

Lazy UnStuffed Cabbage Recipe

Unstuffed cabbage. Huh? That’s right! I would like to say that it is this week’s inclement weather which is inspiring me to make this wonderful comfort food, except I love comfort foods anytime anywhere, in all seasons. Cabbage, tomatoes, rice, meat (or even no meat for a fantastic vegetarian stuffed cabbage variation)? I’m there! Un-stuffed cabbage is very liberating, as it is so easy and just as delicious than stuffed cabbage. Don’t get me wrong, I love stuffed cabbage and the rolls are so pretty. But chances are, when you realize that not stuffed cabbage is every bit as delicious as stuffed cabbage, you might mike it more often, as I do!

Mrs. Epstein, feeling sorry for a pauper who appears at her door, invites him in, and gives him a substantial meal: chicken, kugel, wine, and two kinds of bread – black bread and challah.
The pauper devours everything he is given except the black bread. "The challah was wonderful," he says. "Do you have any more?"
"My dear man," says Mrs. Epstein, "we have plenty of black bread, but challah is very expensive."
"I know," says the pauper. "But believe me lady, it's worth it!"

"Everyone must regard himself and the world as evenly poised between good and guilt...If he performed a good deed, he has shifted the balance of his fate, and that of the entire world to good, and has brought deliverance and salvation upon himself and upon them all."
