Texas Homeowners May Finally Be Seeing Some Insurance Relief
After several years of rising insurance costs, there may finally be some encouraging news for Texas homeowners. According to the Texas Department of Insurance, most homeowners insurance companies that filed rate changes since July 1 proposed decreases, affecting approximately 700,000 policyholders. Over the past 90 days, those filed rate changes averaged a 4.3% decrease.
Some of the reductions are meaningful. Texas Farm Bureau Mutual filed for a 5.2% decrease, while ASI Lloyds filed for a 6% decrease. TDI also points out that nearly 160 companies sell homeowners and auto insurance in Texas, making it worth shopping around rather than simply accepting your renewal.
My takeaway: This is good news, but I wouldn't assume everyone's insurance bill is about to drop. What it does tell me is that the market may finally be moving in a better direction. Insurance has become a significant part of the affordability conversation in Texas, whether you already own a home or you're trying to buy one. When your policy comes up for renewal, shop it. A lower insurance premium can make a real difference in your monthly housing costs.
