Celebrate State Parks at Samuel P. Taylor State Park
on Wednesday, June 11
California State Parks, along with its partners, will kick off an exciting week-long celebration of California’s parks at Samuel P. Taylor on June 11. Under the tagline “This is where you live,” State Parks’ fourth such annual celebratory week is offering more than 170 in-person and virtual events and experiences across the state, highlighting what makes California’s 280 state parks truly unique. After several official “kick-off” speeches, Samuel P Taylor will be open to the public at 11:00 a.m. with guided walks and special activities.
For MCL, the kick-off coincides with a fitting opportunity to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Marin Conservation League’s successful campaign to persuade the California Parks Commission to acquire historic “Camp Taylor” on Papermill Creek. After a five-year tireless effort by MCL co-founders Caroline Livermore, Helen Van Pelt, and Verna Dunshee, with Sepha Evers leading the way, Camp Taylor became a State Park in 1945. In honor of her diligent efforts, an interpretive center, that MCL helped to finance, was dedicated to Sepha Evers. A bronze plaque bearing her name and mounted on granite now stands at the park’s main entrance.

WHY ARE CHINA CAMP TIDAL MARSHES SO CRITICAL IN SAN FRANSCISO BAY?
Join MCL members and friends to hear Christina Toms, P.E., Ecological Engineer with the San Francisco Regional Water Quality Control Board, describe the evolution and significance of the 100+ acres of tidal marshes surrounding the tip of San Pedro Pt. at China Camp State Park.
There’s much to learn from this stretch of Bay shoreline, which contains all the ecological elements of a “perfect” transitional tidal wetland. Learn why it is an important reference site for research into nature-based adaptive responses to rising bays.
If you haven’t heard Christina speak about lagoons, bays, shorelines, and sea level rise—her favorite topics—you are in for a treat!
