The holiday season is upon us, and what an incredible year of service and impact it has been for LLV! As we gather with friends and family, let’s take a moment to think of those in our community who are facing difficult choices. Picture a neighbor in the grocery store, deciding between purchasing enough food for their family or paying rent on time. These are the challenges LLV is here to help ease.

At LLV, we like to say that we’re in the “empowerment business.” Through the legal system, we’re able to provide crucial support, like helping a mother or father secure the child support they need to care for their children. Research from the Joint Center for Poverty Research reveals that every dollar of child support received effectively doubles its impact, increasing the income of custodial parents and their children by two dollars. This, we believe, is one of the most powerful gifts we can offer during the holiday season.

As many of us enjoy an abundance of food, warmth, and family this season, please consider helping us bring that same sense of stability and security to low-income families in our area. Your support is a gift that empowers, uplifts, and truly transforms lives.

Wishing you and your loved ones all the joys of the season,

Anne Caywood

MEANINGFUL NEW PARTNERSHIPS TO ANNOUNCE THIS VETERANS DAY

We are honored to give back to those who have served us so courageously through our new partnership with Beaufort County Veterans Affairs.

LLV Attorney David Bartholomew and a dedicated team of LLV volunteers recently provided essential legal services—drafting Wills and Health Care Powers of Attorney—for local veterans. This partnership has allowed us to make a meaningful impact, and we look forward to hosting many more clinics in the future.

Reflecting on the clinic, David noted, “You don’t realize how much joy and relief these clinics bring until you see people leaving with smiles, feeling happy and reassured.”

Thank you to Ted and Clair Craver for their generous support, which will make our Wills Clinics possible throughout 2024 and 2025.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: KENNETH C. JOHNSON

Ken is a distinguished graduate of Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and the University of Virginia School of Law. He dedicated 38 years of his career to practicing law with a prominent multi-office corporate firm, specializing in commercial lending, loan workouts and restructurings, and corporate bankruptcy. Over the years, Ken's commitment to the legal profession was demonstrated through active involvement in bar association work. He earned recognition as a Fellow of both the American Bar Foundation and the Ohio State Bar Foundation. Additionally, he served as Chair of the Ohio State Bar Association’s (OSBA) Banking and Commercial Law Committee and led the OSBA’s Bankruptcy Subcommittee.

Ken and his wife, Nancy, have cherished calling Bluffton their home for the past eight years, finding great joy in hosting visits from their two children, five grandchildren, and many dear friends. For the past seven years, Ken has served as a volunteer with Lowcountry Legal Volunteers, finding the experience deeply rewarding and fulfilling beyond expectation.

In recognition of his outstanding dedication, Ken was recently invited to join the LLV Board of Trustees, receiving unanimous approval. His commitment and expertise will undoubtedly continue to benefit our organization and the community he serves.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING OUR AUTHOR EVENT A SUCCESS!

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and supported Lowcountry Legal Volunteers at our recent Brunch with an Author event. Local author John Warley captivated the audience with his wit and storytelling, alongside our wonderful moderator and Board Member, Dr. Janet Porter. The room was filled with laughter, and guests enjoyed delicious food and drink as John shared insights into his thrilling book, Jury of One.

Your support and enthusiasm made this event truly special—thank you!
