Fire Chief, Adam A. House
We want to extend a warm welcome home to the two strike teams of firefighters and Chief Officers that we deployed to southern California to combat the fires burning in Los Angeles County. These teams included several fire crew members and three fire engines. The fire crews provided assistance for a total of 16 days before being rotated out with other firefighters and equipment. Despite sending these crews, our ability to respond to emergencies here at home was not compromised. Metro Fire is proud to support those in need during critical times. We also started the new year with a remarkable group of new recruits! Last December, 16 outstanding individuals graduated from our fire academy, officially joining the ranks of dedicated firefighters. These new recruits will now embark on an important one-year probation period, during which they will receive training and engage in the day-to-day responsibilities of this vital role. Congratulations to all our new recruits—we can’t wait to see the incredible contributions you will make!
Measure O—our Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Fire and Emergency Medical Response measure—was successfully passed during the November election! A heartfelt thank you to our community for your support. This measure addresses vital capital needs, ensuring that we can effectively meet the growing public safety demands of the communities we proudly serve.
We also want to warmly welcome Shawn Stark, our new Division 5 board member who represents Carmichael, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale. Metro Fire is governed by a nine-person board of directors, with each board member elected by voters within a specific geographical area or division of Metro Fire's operational area. Our community is always invited to attend our board meetings on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the boardroom at our headquarters at 10545 Armstrong Ave., Suite 200, Mather. If you cannot attend in person, you can catch the video recordings of our meetings on our website.
Forty participants have been invited to join Metro Fire's inaugural Citizens Academy beginning February 5, 2025 This engaging 9-week course will provide an in-depth look at our emergency response operations, covering essential topics such as Fire and Rescue Operations, Water Rescue, Hazardous Materials, and Emergency Medical Services. We hope this program will enlighten and empower our citizens with valuable education while introducing them to Metro Fire's rich history and our dedicated team leaders.

How Many Smoke Alarms Do I Need?
Installing your smoke alarms correctly - and making sure they are in working order - is an important step to making your home and family safer from fire.
It’s important to have enough smoke alarms in your home. Fire research has demonstrated that with today’s modern furnishings, fires can spread much more rapidly than in the past when more natural materials were used. Because of this, having a sufficient number of properly located smoke alarms is essential to maximize the amount of available escape time. For many years NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, has required as a minimum that smoke alarms be installed inside every sleep room (even for existing homes) in addition to requiring them outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. (Additional smoke alarms are required for larger homes.) Homes built to earlier standards often don’t meet these minimum requirements. Homeowners and enforcement authorities should recognize that detection needs have changed over the years and take proactive steps make sure that every home has a sufficient complement of smoke alarms.

Use Home Heating Equipment Safely
National Burn Awareness Week is February 2 – 8, 2025, a time to unite and promote burn prevention and awareness. This year’s theme focuses on reducing burn risks in homes, apartments, and all living spaces. Heating equipment, like space heaters, is involved in one of every six home fires. Furthermore, one in five home fire deaths and half of all fires caused by home heating occur between December and February.
- Prevent fire and burns from fire by always keep anything that gives off heat at least three feet away from flammable materials or items.
- Never plug more than one heating appliance into an outlet.
- Keep portable gas generators outside and away from windows to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- If you have a fireplace, ensure your chimney is checked and cleaned by a professional once a year. Use a metal or glass screen that is large enough to prevent embers from escaping.
- Never leave fires (or candles) burning or heating appliances plugged in, while asleep in another room, or when you leave your home.

A dozer's fire line plays a crucial role in extinguishing wildland fires. These lines, created using the front 10-foot blade, are placed ahead of a fire, removing flammable plant material down to bare soil, leaving nothing for the fire to burn. Fire containment is measured as a percentage of a wildfire's perimeter that is surrounded by a control line. For example, if a wildfire is 25% contained, it means that control lines have been established around 25% of its perimeter. | |

In Recognition of 31 Years of Service
Chief Law began her incredible career with a predecessor agency of Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District in 1994 and officially retired in January 2025 as the Assistant Chief – Fire Marshal.
In 1989, before being hired by Metro Fire, Chief Law worked as an EMT and then as a paramedic with Sacramento Ambulance in Sacramento and Yolo County. She spent five years in a transporting advanced life support unit within the 9-1-1 system.
A rare part-time paramedic position with the Fair Oaks Fire Department opened up, and she applied. The opportunity was life-changing for her. Fair Oaks Fire District soon merged with the Sacramento County Fire Protection District (SCFPD), where she tested for a Firefighter/Paramedic position. The department sent her through the Academy, and Chief Law served as a Firefighter/Paramedic from 1994 to 2001, after which she was promoted to Captain/Paramedic, a role she held from 2001 to 2016. In 2016, she was promoted to Battalion Chief. While this was an operations position, she maintained her paramedic license and remained engaged in Sacramento County's EMS system. In 2018, she was promoted to Assistant Chief and achieved her long-term goal of becoming Metro Fire's Emergency Medical Services Director.
In 2022, as Assistant Chief, she became Metro Fire's Fire Marshal and managed the Community Risk Reduction Division (CRRD). We thank Chief Law for her 31 years of remarkable service, leadership, and selfless devotion to duty.
