Cody's Corner Provides Insight on Public Health
In Halifax's most recent episode of Cody's Corner, Halifax Health Agent Bob Valery joined Cody to talk about public health.

Public health is a broad term, and Valery does a variety of jobs, including water safety and taking samples, food inspections for restaurants, septic work and protecting ground water. Even the air quality is monitored by health agents. As he says, prevention is best. The Halifax Board of Health even has an A-Z listing of local public health resources so you can get all your questions answered. Valery has also been a huge help with the Public Health Excellence Act, to which Halifax serves as a sponsor.
Cody's Corner is released monthly, and Cody himself provides happenings and updates around Halifax.

STANDISH MANOR SCHOOL
HALIFAX, MASSACHUSETTS
(from a small handbook at the
Museum of Halifax)
A Special School for Girls
HALIFAX - near PLYMOUTH - MASSACHUSETTS
Miss Alice M. Myers, Principal
Hazel G. Cullingford, Assistant Principal
The Special School for Girls
Standish Manor, the special school for girls who need and desire personal care and individual instruction, was opened in 1911. So rapidly did this school outgrow its environment that there was need for even larger accommodations and better advantages for its students, and within a few years it was moved to the Standish Manor at Halifax, Massachusetts, which name it now bears. The search of more than a year for a large cheery home surrounded by spacious lawns, yet easily accessible to the larger cities, ended with the discovery of Standish Manor.
Halifax, twelve miles from historic Plymouth, is but twenty-eight miles from Boston on the direct line of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.
An Attractive, Homelike School
Standish Manor, a most attractive, rambling house with large, airy rooms, all of which are flooded with sunlight at some part of the day, is an ideal school home for girls. Wide green lawns encircle the School which stands on the top of a rolling knoll high above the adjacent land. Health-giving pines stand beside the tall shade trees.
An air of quiet, peaceful happiness pervades the Manor and the cozy, sunny study-rooms where girls find everything to make work interesting. The building is amply supplied with bathrooms and all other modern conveniences. Good times center about the gymnasium and play room. Here a large open fireplace, a piano and Victrola in leisure hours inspire the girls to dancing, singing, games, story telling and reading. In the same building are the Domestic Science Department and the Studio for Manual Arts. The cheery rooms where the girls live have been described by one of the students as "happy rooms."

Climate Can Do: Addressing Climate Resilience through Fairtrade Chocolate
Do you love chocolate? If so, you're not alone. Americans eat 58 million pounds of chocolate during Valentine's week, lets look at some eco-friendly ways to enjoy it.
The supply of chocolate struggles with the increasing demand due to the impact of climate change on the cocoa industry.
Cocoa trees grow in humid climates and take up to a year to produce enough cocoa for half a pound of chocolate. Climate Change is a significant threat to countries around the equator, like Indonesia, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast, where cocoa grows.
Sustainable cocoa farming promotes fair trade and climate-smart practices, helping farmers earn fair prices, prevent deforestation, and mitigate climate change. However, producing chocolate has a high carbon footprint due to transportation and requires over 1,180 gallons of water per pound.
You can reduce your chocolate's carbon footprint by taking simple steps:
- Choose simple, recyclable packaging over fancy ones.
- Choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate for lower sugar content and a smaller carbon footprint.
- Buy fair trade chocolate that guarantees sustainable cocoa farming and fair payment to farmers.
- Choose local "bean-to-bar" chocolate for quality and eco-friendliness.
Look for products with third-party certifications, like Fair Trade USA, or brands like Choceur Superberries, Chuao Chocolatier, and Bake Believe, to name a few.
Jennifer Hernández, BuzzAround Intern and Southern New Hampshire University graduate student wrote this Climate Can-Do Article.
Together, we can make a difference by taking action to live sustainably. Let's empower ourselves to create a better future for our planet, one step at a time.

Halifax Elementary Students Celebrate 100 & 1,000 Days of School
|
|
Last week, the Kindergarten class of Halifax Elementary celebrated 100 days of school!
They reminisced over all the knowledge they've gained, and all the hard work put in. They also learned about Lunar New Year, and created their own dragons, just like the ones used in the parades! The whole day was filled with joy and pride as students showcased their dragons, bringing the spirit of Lunar New Year into their classroom.
|
|
Likewise, the fifth grade students celebrated 1, 000 days of school since starting kindergarten! The students looked back on all their years in elementary school. To celebrate, some students wrote 1,000 characters about a school memory, some recalled things they've been told 1,000 times, and others attempted a thousand day math challenge.

As a social entrepreneurship
your Buzz Around is all about the “why.”
Why create a news source focused on each community’s good news?
When a community feels good about itself, it has pride, and when a human feels good about their existence, they feel empowered.
In a world where we are constantly barraged with negativity, violence and seemingly insurmountable problems, the BuzzAround provides a positive vision.
We have the power to overcome through action. Humans can be just, thoughtful AND deliberate. We can learn to respect each other and teach our children to do the same. We live in a democracy, where each person has power.
How to we engage with our community in a way that will improve our own quality of life and the life of those around us? In the Buzz Around, our reader finds stories about their friends and neighbors and action that we can take to be part of the solution.

Thank you for reading and for the time you take to make our world a better place, one good story at a time. ~Jacquie
