Congratulations Graduates!

This winter, we were able to once again offer the popular "Healthy Eating for Successful Living" class in collaboration with Cape Cod Cooperative Extension. The class, led by registered dietitians Dot Kingsbury (ESCCI) and Sue Bourque (CCCE), met regularly at the Falmouth Senior Center, with the occasional field trips to test new skills in real world situations. Congratulations to all who earned their certificate of completion! Change can be daunting but less so when we tackle it together. Happy eating, graduates!

Renown jazz vocalist Candida Rose will be on hand to celebrate the Grand Opening of Café Saborosa, which puts a fresh twist on Senior Social Dining.

Saborosa means “tasty” in Portuguese and the Café will feature foods from Portugal, Cape Verde and the Caribbean. These flavors will be warmly familiar to some diners but for others, new and different. The goal of the Café is to encourage more people to try Senior Social Dining.

Elder Services offers social dining at four locations in Barnstable County and at the Saltmarsh Senior Center on Nantucket. Beginning May 6, we’ll be adding Saborosa Café Mondays to the schedule at our Mashpee site and featuring selections from the Caribbean menu developed by our partners at City Fresh Foods.

Meals-on-Wheels subscribers in Barnstable County were introduced to City Fresh’s Caribbean option in the fall of 2022. It was enthusiastically embraced by diners, one of whom wrote to us: “Kudos to your Caribbean chef! I lived in Jamaica and love Island food. I don’t know all the Latin food, but it is amazing!!”

Entertainment at Café Saborosa’s Grand Opening will be provided by Candida Rose. A 2nd generation American-born Cape Verdean, born and raised in New Bedford, Candida Rose is a performer and music educator. Her music is informed by the rhythms and melodies of her heritage, but infused with the overtones and undertones of jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel to create a sound that is fresh and unique. Critics have described it as having “just the right touch of international spice.”

Just like Café Saborosa!

Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands relies on volunteers to help us successfully fulfill our mission. Our volunteers continue to be our partners-in-service to our consumers and community, assisting us to deliver programs and advocacy.

Communities across the Cape & Islands are in need. Residents are struggling to meet the costs of utilities, food, and—especially—housing  Many who are experiencing economic hardships depend on services and programs such as food banks and Meals-on-Wheels.

Volunteers serving on our Board of Directors & Advisory Councils aid us in identifying and addressing the needs and challenges of our aging neighbors in the tri-county area. Our Money Management volunteers help our consumers stretch every last penny of their monthly budget. Meals-on-Wheels volunteers are answering the call to meet the rapidly expanding demand for this vital program. Our Long Term Care Ombudsmen advocate for adequate care, while facilities experience workforce shortages. All of our volunteers are helping to improve the health and quality of life for older adults, offering real solutions, and turning their service into real action.

Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE) is a community service organization that believes “volunteering is transformative: lives within the community have
