When Silence Costs More Than Truth: A Zero Moment in Paradise

We spent over a year saving up for a milestone getaway- one week in paradise, at a resort with a name known across the Caribbean and a reputation as old as the island itself.

We weren’t first-time travelers. We’re long-time loyalists. We know what quality looks like, and more importantly, what care feels like.

But here’s the thing no one tells you until you live it:

Even paradise can disappoint you.

Not because of a single failure, but because of dozens of small signals that no one is paying attention.

  • Beaches rendered unusable due to a barrage of seaweed, and no effort made to restore them
  • Pools closed with no notice, on the busiest days
  • Staff who seemed tired, unsupported, untrained- not unkind, just unempowered
  • A historic property coasting on its name, rather than delivering on its promise
  • A stunning setting with zero storytelling, zero spark, and no soul

And yet...

There were glimmers of what could have been.

A kind concierge. A fast housekeeper. A manager who tried to right the wrong.

But here’s the truth we forget to say out loud:

A good moment here or there can’t redeem a system that isn’t set up to care.

This is a wake-up call to anyone in the service business — especially those in hospitality:

  • If your team isn’t trained, they can’t deliver.
  • If your property isn’t maintained, it can’t impress.
  • If your loyal guests leave disappointed, they may never come back, and they may never tell you why, but they will tell everyone they know.

We almost didn’t tell this story.

My husband and I, we’re not into callouts, hashtags, or drama.

But silence helps no one.

Feedback is an act of care.

So is truth. So is candor.

If you’re running a business, a hotel, or even a single shift- pay attention. Empower your people. Don’t take trust for granted.

One bad experience can cost you a customer.

But one honest voice can help save your reputation.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. what's one thing you feel hospitality should be mindful of and work to improve? Any recent hero or zero moments? write to me and let's brainstorm together on how to celebrate these, or on ways we can improve them!

TIP of the Week

No one Owns the moment, But Everyone Feels it

Customers don’t expect perfection — they expect presence.

The smallest slip becomes a lasting memory when no one steps up to make it right.

Empower your team to notice, to care, and to act.

Because when no one owns the moment, the customer carries it with them.

Simple Can Be Sweet, Too

I’ve always prided myself on being resourceful , and a little creatively scrappy when needed. This past week on vacation, I had every intention of unplugging, relaxing, and soaking up island life. But I also knew the danger of too many mocktails, too many gelatos, and too many indulgences. You know the saying, once on the lips, forever on the hips. It’s real.

We had planned to sleep in, eat out, and fully lean into the luxury of it all. But from day one, we realized that seven days of restaurant meals wasn’t going to be kind to our waistlines... or our wallets.

So we found our own rhythm.

Just 10 minutes away was a small supermarket- fresh fruit, eggs, veggies, even local baked goods. From there, it became our daily ritual: cooking breakfast in our suite, whipping up omelets, home fries, French toast, whatever we felt like. It was fun, creative, and surprisingly grounding.

The best part?

We got to enjoy it on our terrace, with the breeze in our hair, the waves in the distance, and the occasional rooster crowing (at 10:30am....someone forgot to set his alarm). Add in a few curious birds and a monkey sighting or two, and you realize...sometimes the simplest moments are the ones that stay with you.

Luxury is nice. But making your own kind of magic? That’s unforgettable.

What's something you do while on vacation to stay grounded? What ritual do you keep, or new habit do you find yourself starting? Tell me about it! Let's share and learn together.
