With a Thankful Heart we say Goodbye

Like so many others in the Dayton community, DECA mourns the passing of Mr. Clay Mathile.  The Mathile Family Foundation was instrumental in helping build DECA into the school district it is today, taking a vested interest in providing quality education choices and programs for urban students.  Their generosity has impacted the lives of countless children and families in the Dayton community.

The Mathile Family Foundation stood by and showed up for DECA time and time again to help grow and fulfill our mission to prove education can and does change lives. On behalf of Superintendent David Taylor, the Board of Trustees, and the entire DECA family, we extend our deepest sympathies to MaryAnn and the Mathile family. Clay has left his mark on the Dayton Early College Academy and we are forever grateful.

The Art of Giving is Multifaceted

Star Neloms, DECA class of 2014, celebrated some members of our junior class last Friday who have already passed Gateway 3.  Star and her business partner, Kia Halfacre, treated 18 deserving scholars to a Chick Fil-a lunch in an effort to celebrate these students' hard work and commitment to managing their time to move through the six gateways required for graduation.  Star has brought our mission to life by graduating from DECA, earning her BA degree in criminal justice, and now giving back to the Dayton community through BDM Sisters Grouphome.  Thank you Star for giving back to these DECA juniors!

DECA High welcomed a wonderful group of volunteers to come in after school to work with our DECA Ambassadors.  DECA Ambassadors represent our school by participating in supporter visits and school and community events. To become an ambassador, a student must be in grades 10-12, be referred by a teacher or staff member, and be in good academic standing. Students worked with volunteers to practice answering questions they may encounter as a student ambassador. Many thanks to Billie Lucente-Baker, Jonathan Cain, Kia Halfacre, Steve LeVon, Tom Mangan, John McArthur, Suzi Mikutis, Star Neloms, Thomas Scroggins, and Adrian Taylor for helping us give these student leaders a chance to practice their skills!  If you would like to see them in action, please consider scheduling a visit to DECA High! Reach out to Jenny Schade-Taylor at jschade@daytonearlycollege.org to schedule a tour and meet a few of these amazing kids!

Supporter Spotlight

Our DECA supporters are incredible and occasionally we hear news about them that we just have to share!  Dr. Jane Lynch, Chief Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at UT Health in San Antonio, contributed to the first FDA approved bionic pancreas for those with Type 1 diabetes.  The bionic pancreas, which received FDA approval this past May, uses artificial intelligence for automated insulin delivery.  Dr. Lynch is now prescribing this device for her pediatric patients and we couldn't be more proud of her accomplishments-truly life changing work!  Do you know of a DECA supporter doing amazing work that needs to be shared? Send your nominations to Jenny Schade-Taylor at jschade@daytonearlycollege.org for a future Supporter Spotlight!

We are Thankful for Continued Connections

Synchrony Many thanks to our friends at Synchrony for their generous donation of school supplies for our high school students!  Synchrony employees were able to purchase school supplies including backpacks, reusable water bottles, binders, writing utensils, paper, and hand sanitizer from an Amazon wishlist to ship directly to our school to help our students this school year.  In addition, several Synchrony employees have taken a vested interest in a cohort of juniors and seniors by providing a deeper look into their company and engaging with them as mentors. We look forward to a great job shadow experience and thank Synchrony for their continued support of our scholars!
