20 Years of Dignity

A Message from Executive Director Kimberly Grady

Dear Dignity Defender,

First, let me wish you a very happy new year. I hope that the last few weeks provided you and your family ample time to rest, reflect, and cherish the things that matter most to you.

As we begin 2026, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement because Think Dignity is celebrating a very special milestone — 20 years of serving San Diego! I keep thinking about how incredible it is that this work has been sustained for two decades, and the truth is, it simply would not be possible without supporters like you.

Your contributions to our organization's work has made Think Dignity into what it is today, no matter how you came to join us — whether you were among the founding women who called for a more dignified San Diego, have been a sustaining donor over the years, or are one of our valued volunteers.

I hope you’ll join us throughout 2026 to celebrate 20 Years of Dignity and continue supporting our mission to advance basic dignity for our unhoused neighbors.

Thank you,

Kimberly Grady, MBM

$20,000 for our 20th Anniversary

As we celebrate twenty years of serving San Diego, we’re asking our Dignity Defenders to help us reach our goal of raising $20,000 for our 20th Anniversary!

We’re kicking off 2026 with the “20 for 20” campaign to support our newest impact programs, the launch of our Dignity Legal Services, and the continuation of the Basic Dignity Coalition (BDC 2.0).

Help us ensure that 2026 is the Year of Dignity!

Decades of Impact

On October 5, 2006, nine women gathered for dinner at co-founder Rachel Jensen’s home to discuss the challenges of homelessness. The ladies passed many of their displaced neighbors on the streets and it was becoming increasingly clear that a few bucks here, a meal there, were only temporarily helpful.

They desired a tangible way to restore basic dignity to these individuals and understood these unhoused neighbors were citizens too. Each person had their own story: mothers and fathers, someone’s child, a man forgotten after becoming disabled during war. Many endured great tragedy. That night, our organization was born as Girls Think Tank.

Now named Think Dignity, our organization has grown to be many members strong and our efforts are reaching the masses.

Mission Moment

The Courage to Triumph

The Transitional Storage Center (TSC) gave Sammy enough time to overcome, what he called, his “fails.” Sammy, now a former TSC client, reached an amazing milestone last year; he checked out his belongings from the Transitional Storage Center.

“It gave me enough courage to triumph and reach my goals!”

When asked how the center positively impacted his life, Sammy beamed with pride. He remarked that the TSC “gave me enough courage to triumph and reach my goals!”

Before obtaining safe storage at the TSC, Sammy often resorted to hiding his belongings on the streets. He relented that he frequently experienced losing what property he had.

The Transitional Storage Center allowed Sammy to keep his belongings safe while he took steps to make positive changes in his life.

“Without the TSC, I wouldn’t have been able to go out and get that job and find a place to stay.” Sammy has found stable housing, employment, and he has acquired a vehicle.

Street Boutique Receives $10K Donation

Think Dignity Recognized by Brides for a Cause

Last week, our organization was recognized for our support and service to women experiencing homelessness by Brides for a Cause with a $10,000 donation to benefit the Street Boutique.

Our Street Boutique program was launched in 2017 to address period poverty and prevent long-term health issues caused by lack of access to hygienic products and garments for women experiencing homelessness in San Diego.

Over the last year, we distributed over 750 items to 445 unhoused neighbors at 9 Street Boutique pop-ups across the county. Every item we distribute is more than a basic necessity — it’s a step toward restored dignity, health, and confidence.

We are incredibly grateful to our friends at Brides for a Cause for their recognition of our work and support of the Street Boutique!

Brides for a Cause is a nonprofit missioned to collect and resell donated wedding dresses to raise funds for women’s causes. Started in 2012 in Portland, OR, Brides for a Cause currently operates five boutique locations: Portland, Tacoma, Seattle, Sacramento, and San Diego.
