The Easton Branch in 1978
We did say there would be more renovation stories heading your way; so, let's take it back to the 1970s when the Easton Branch was moving from its location in the South Wing of the county courthouse to its present-day home.
Mary Munro, former Director of the Talbot County Free Library (1981 - 1998) graciously shared her perspective on the move, and all the helping hands that made it possible.
Mary shared with us how instrumental the Telephone Pioneers of America were in the big move. The Telephone Pioneers are comprised of chapters across the nation who are dedicated to providing community service. Local chapter volunteers along with high-school aged first-time offenders from the Talbot County Detention Center were a significant help when it came to moving and shelving the collection.
Even with a plethora of helping hands, moving is rarely a straightforward experience - but one special volunteer made the task more efficient - General Larry Carruthers.
"General Larry Carruthers helped 'design' the move itself. We didn't have professional movers: we did it ourselves with lots of help from the community--people would just drop in and ask how they could help, and it was General Carruthers who made it possible for that to happen" said Mary. "In the army he was responsible for moving bases and major installations and one day he came in, took me aside and said 'I'm going to tell you how to do this move.' I followed his instructions to a 'T' and they worked!"
Stories like these remind us how fortunate we are to have all of you as part of our Library community. We hope you'll consider sharing your own Library stories and memories as we celebrate our Centennial milestone together!
