Hen House Weekly E-News

October 9, 2026

Why Hen House? The friendly chatter before Worship on Sundays reminds us of a Hen House! Since Jesus identified himself as a Mother Hen and, as an historical farm church, we enjoy being God's ‘Hen House’ and welcome everyone (town, urban, and rural) to our Worship and other programs - and invite you to even make Zwingli your Church home. The United Church of Christ values all people!

Zwingli's Stewardship Celebration begins this Sunday! I like to focus on stewardship season as a time to celebrate the opportunity to be stewards of God's gifts to us, stewards of our very lives, time, talent, and resources, as well as stewards of our spiritual selves. Each week we will focus on what it means to "Tend God's Light" within ourselves and within Zwingli. I hope you will join us as often as possible. Watch for a letter from the Church giving you information from me and the Council -- and for more info in this Hen House News in the coming weeks.

This Sunday we will be reflecting on that ancient story in Exodus of when the people made a golden calf to worship (Exodus 32:1-14). This story invites us to reflect on our golden calves, on what we tend to put our attention into (time, talent and resources) that can dominate our lives and so we risk losing our true identity as God's beloved ones. This can include habits or addictions (to work or substances ..., money and power), our systems (religious, political, social, educational, ...), our prejudices, .... The list could go on. I don't think we do this because we are bad, but because we are looking for a sense of security or esteem or power to feel more whole. Ultimately all 'golden calves' will fail at this. Only in God will we find the wholeness we are looking for. So we must find our ways to 'tend the light' of God within us and within our community. In preparation for Sunday, I invite you to reflect on this prayer:

My Golden Calf

by Steve Garnaas-Holmes

O God, my golden calf is my self:

this “me” that I worship and defend,

the self that controls me,

that I serve above all other gods.

I am my own highest power.

I am obsessed with how I appear to myself,

to others, and especially to the God I imagine,

who is a projection of my self.

My religion is being good enough,

either smug that I am or despairing that I’m not,

always desperately trying to be.

I can’t crush the idol and be done with it.

Every day I face the idol of my self,

what it wants, how it thinks, how it moves me.

Only You can set me free.

O Love, set me free. Lead me out of Egypt.

I surrender my self and my captivity to it.

I turn my heart to You and your steady love.

I let your love set my course, guide me, move me.

I step out of myself and come to you

as your Beloved, helpless and adoring as an infant.

I am a beam of your love.

Apart from you I am nothing, but in you I am light.

Your love is my constant, my all, my life.

Your love is the very stuff of my self.

My self is not an image of me, but of you:

I am the image of your love,

fashioned by you,

alive in this world by your grace.

You alone are my God.

You Are.

You.

Blessings,

Pastor Karla

Church Council News

Zwingli Cookout Oct. 4!

On Sunday Oct. 4 our Council hosted a Cookout on our backyard fireplace! In Worship Jerry and Kriss shared a fun bit of history about how the fireplace was built: Jerry was a younger member of the youth group who built it. Many thanks to Jerry's son-in-law Greg and grandson Devin for doing the grilling, and to Council members for serving the meal. Many of Jerry's family came, including two of his great grandchildren. We also enjoyed a visit by our special friends from Maine this weekend -- Forrest, Molly and 3 year old Phoebe who gave us all stickers and snakes all morning! Many thanks to our Council for making this fun Cookout happen and honoring the history of the fireplace!

Our Council is excited to announce our 5 week Stewardship Series (see image). On each Sunday we will explore what it means to "Tend God's Light" as stewards of our time, talents, resources, and lives.

Special services in these 5 weeks include

  • Sunday, Oct. 25 when the music of Dolly Parton will be featured as we reflect that Sunday on Jesus' greatest commandment of Love.
  • Sunday, Nov. 1 we will celebrate our Saints who tended God's light while they lived among us.
  • Then on November 8 we welcome guest preacher, Rev. Rachel Bauman, our Associate Conference Minister. After Worship that Sunday we will take a photo of our congregation (so come prepared to have your photo taken) and Council will be serving us a Brunch!

Watch for a letter coming from our Pastor and Council with more information on a special Conversation on our Shared Partnership with Rachel, which follows our Brunch on November 8. We hope you can attend our Stewardship Celebration Sundays as often as possible.

Opportunities for Citizen Advocacy through letters to Congress

The United Church of Christ offers us the opportunity to learn more about bills before Congress and voice our opinions to our legislators. They make it very easy to send an email. Check out the many topics on their page: https://www.ucc.org/action-center/. The most recent one is: Speak up for Immigrant Children Facing Court Alone. Scroll down the page to find others that you might want to express your opinion about.

The Southern Region of the Wisconsin Conference UCC publishes Shalom, a monthly e-newsletter featuring events and happenings within the Conference, including Zwingli. Click here to check it out!
