All Saints Sunday

Perhaps the church, at its best, is “all ears.” God urges the faithful, again and again, to “listen up!”—to heed the word that gives life. So it was with Abraham and Sarah, Mary and Martha, and the early church at Colossae. So it is today as we join the assembly to hear the word of God, the word of life.

Devotional for the Week | from Sundays and Seasons

Saintly Sinners, Sinful Saints

All Saints Sunday and the appointed readings are pregnant with themes of stark contrast: death and life, condemnation and redemption, sorrow and joy, suffering and relief, present life and future life. Such is life, too, as baptized children of God. The very nature of our lives is stark contrast.

By virtue of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus, we are made saints while we are still sinners. Every day in this juxtaposed life we navigate through rough waters such as sin, evil, pain, heartache, addiction, abuse, hunger, disease, and war. But our bearing is always set, not by the North Star but by the Daystar, who has been the heading for the faithful of every generation. With the scriptures as our compass and the confessions our map, we sail as a part of the great flotilla of saints on the waters of baptism, with the wind of the Spirit at our backs, always pointed in the direction of our guiding Daystar.

Today we give thanks for the saints who have gone before us, for the saints still among us, and for the saints of God still to come. We give thanks for the examples of faithful living that the saints have given us as they navigated the stormy waters of life, and also for the faithful acts of service we are empowered by God’s Holy Spirit to do in our own seas. We give thanks, too, for the fullness of eternal life in which the saints of God who have gone before us now partake and which we have yet to fully enjoy.

The Joy of Doing God's Work TOGETHER

The Good Samaritan was a neighbor to a stranger in need. He gave time and money to care for the victim of a roadside mugging. Can you think of a time when you helped a stranger in need? Be as specific as possible. What were the circumstances? Who was the person? What did you do?

Here at Christ Lutheran Church, we strive to work together to help people in need in our community and around the world. We may not know many of them closely, yet still we call them our neighbors. Jesus commends the Good Samaritan by saying he was a neighbor to the man by the side of the road. Being a neighbor is how we do God’s work in the world.

Fred Rogers used to sing, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” Imagine someone in need — maybe someone in our community, maybe someone around the world. Next, hear yourself say to that person, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” Then see yourself being a neighbor to that person through your actions. Finally, see our congregation, together, being their neighbor.

Christ's Cupboard

Thanks to DAR members, Christ's Cupboard has more canned fruit and vegetables than ever. We received over 200 items for our shelves. To complete readying the pantry to move on, we need soaps (laundry, dish, personal), dry pasta (not sauce), cereal, saltine crackers, hygiene products, and always toilet tissue. With a little effort, we can fill our pantry before Thanksgiving. Christ is calling us to feed our neighbors in need!

Advantages of Online Giving

Have you considered the online giving option? Here are some of the advantages:

Advantages of Vanco Electronic Giving:

  1. No paper envelopes and checks to be processed.
  2. Giving is much more private.
  3. Minimizes Sunday morning counting and bank trips.
  4. Florida snowbirds don’t have to send physical checks in the mail.
  5. Credit/Debit cards are a second option to direct bank-to-bank transactions if desired.
  6. Specialized giving such as ‘Furnace Fund’ can be easily set up to avoid the hassle of separate checks or cash for miscellaneous giving.
  7. You have complete control of starting/stopping/changing as you wish.
  8. A history of your giving is directly available through the Vanco app without having to check with the Financial Secretary.
  9. Money is transferred to our church checking account in a matter of 1-2 days rather than a week or two after the fact.

If you are ready to make the change from paper, please speak with Jerre Fercho or Bob Howell. They will be happy to talk with you about the advantages and get you set up!

We thank everyone for what has been given to date and appreciate all efforts made to stay current.

Thank you!
