Vermont Tennis News
Thank You Volunteers
2022 has been an unusual year, one in which tennis in Vermont almost looked like it did pre-COVID. Competitive tennis resumed in earnest locally and globally. Here at home, while our league participation hasn’t completely rebounded, we are keeping our LLC Beth Cook very busy! Our private indoor and outdoor clubs and public courts have been bursting at the seams with in-house leagues, tennis ladders, and clinics. For juniors there has been a successful 2022 statewide high school season, year-round junior training, and summer matchplay. And in communities around the state, we've had Tennis in the Parks and adult Learn to Play programming.
USTA Vermont Launches Website
Funded by USTA Vermont, tennisinvt.com connects all Vermonters around the game of tennis. In addition to information about USTA leagues and events, the website features a calendar of events, a comprehensive list of Vermont tennis facilities, a blog, past newsletters, and plenty of information for people who want to stay in the loop on all things tennis in Vermont.

Provider Spotlight: Burlington Tennis Club
Nestled among trees and with a view of both Mount Mansfield and Camel’s Hump, Burlington Tennis Club’s eight beautifully maintained HarTru clay courts were pumping all summer long.

Membership continues to grow and they are accepting new member applications from December onward. The player's social nights, adult clinics, junior tennis programs, and private lessons were once again very popular. BTC plans to open again around mid-May and close at the end of October.

While USTA New England has a critical shortage of certified USTA Officials, here in Vermont, we have ZERO, none, nada. This means that for sanctioned tournaments, D2 Collegiate tennis, high school championships, and other community events, we are in the unfortunate position of having to go without USTA or ITA certified officials who foster fair play and good sportsmanship while presiding at competitive events.

USTA Vermont is offering to subsidize official’s training expenses through their grants program as well as guide potential officials to the USTA New England staff to support their journey. According to the USTA New England website, officials play an integral role at tournaments at all levels from local community events to professional events by ensuring fair play and sportsmanship. They serve as Roving Umpire, Line Umpire, Referee or Chair Umpires. Once you complete the certification and training process, you work with New England’s assigner’s office to be paid for your officiating services! Here are some links to help get you started:

Volunteer Opportunities
USTA Vermont is looking to build a service network of volunteers who can support our work at their desired level of participation. None of us on the Board of Directors is a paid employee; we dedicate our time and energy to building a bigger and more inclusive tennis community because we believe together we can make tennis available for all. What is NJTL?
