Help Us Preserve Our Rail and Community History

As part of the transformation of the Monkton Station Museum into a vibrant community hub, we are launching our "History Harvest" initiative. This project directly supports our new, professional exhibits and encourages you to share in telling these stories by contributing your community memories.

To make these new museum exhibits a success, we need YOU to help tell our local history.

Think about those old photographs, documents, maps, postcards, timetables, or other pieces of local history tucked away at home... bring them into the light!

This Friday, September 18, from 4–7 PM, we’re holding our first History Harvest Day at Monkton Station — and we’d love for you to be part of it.

The History Harvest is part of a larger effort now underway to renew and improve the museum at Monkton Station. We are inventorying and documenting the museum’s existing collection, researching the history of the station and railroad, and beginning to plan new exhibits that can better tell the story of this remarkable place.

But the story of Monkton Station can’t be found only in the things already inside the museum. Much of it is still in the hands of families and people who remember the Northern Central Railway, the early years of the NCR/Torrey C. Brown Trail, and the communities along the railroad and trail.

That’s where the History Harvest comes in.

Bring your photographs, documents, railroad materials, or other historical items to Monkton Station. We’ll have equipment and volunteers available to scan many materials while you’re there, so you keep your originals while allowing us to preserve a digital copy for historical and educational use. What we discover may also help shape the stories we tell in the renewed museum.

And history isn’t just photographs and papers. We want to hear your stories, too. If you remember the railroad, Monkton Station, the early years of the trail, or life in the surrounding community, come talk with us. We’ll be collecting memories and oral histories as part of the project.

Have something that might be interesting? Bring it along. You may have a piece of history we haven’t seen before.

Dinner for the Trail, Then Join Us at the Meeting!

Join us for our new monthly community tradition. In September, and now officially through November, the third Tuesday of every month is officially NCR Trail Night at a local favorite, the Woodfire Kitchen in Hereford.

Our next event in this new series is this coming Tuesday, September 15, from 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM.

Here is how it works:

  • Eat Well: Grab lunch or dinner—either dine-in or carryout—at Woodfire Kitchen.
  • Support the Trail: Mention the NCR/Hereford Volunteer Association when you place your order, and 20% of your receipt will be donated back to support our trail maintenance and other essential group projects.
  • Join the Meeting: Once you've finished dinner, head right over to Monkton Station to join us for our monthly group gathering at 7:30 PM.

It’s the perfect way to turn a Tuesday night into a full community tradition: support a local business, fund the trail, and then sit down with us to help plan our next steps.

People You Meet on the Trail

Every day, thousands of people walk, run, ride, explore, work, and spend time along the NCR Trail—and many of them have remarkable stories.

In this new occasional series, we’ll introduce some of the interesting people you might encounter along the trail and share the stories, passions, and adventures that bring them here.

We begin with Randi Hyatt, who is using the NCR Trail to prepare for an extraordinary challenge: three mountain marathons, on three different trails, over three consecutive days in Lake Tahoe this October.

Meet Randi Hyatt

Running has been a part of my life for a long time, though how I challenge myself has evolved. I began as a road marathoner, completing my first marathon at the 2006 Marine Corps Marathon and my last in Chicago in 2013. That same year, I discovered CrossFit, which became my primary fitness community and focus for over a decade. During that time, I became a Level 2 Coach and have worked out and coached at Titan CrossFit, which I love doing.

In 2024, I decided to try something completely different: a mountain endurance event challenging participants to climb the equivalent elevation of Mount Everest (29,029 feet) over a single weekend.

After completing two of these events (Mont-Tremblant in 2024 and Stratton in 2025), I began looking for my next challenge.

Randi Hyatt during a training day on the NCR Trail at Monkton Station.

This October, I will find out what that challenge looks like. I am training for TRAIL in Lake Tahoe, which consists of three mountain marathons on three different trails over three consecutive days (October 8–10, 2026). Completing three marathons in three days means I will be hiking more than running, with a 12-hour cutoff each day.

Preparing for this kind of distance requires spending significant time on my feet, and the NCR Trail has once again become an essential part of my training (along with the smoothies at the Monkton station cafe!) just as it was during my road marathon days. I have logged countless miles there, including long, back-to-back training days. The trail provides a beautiful, safe, and welcoming environment to build the endurance I need for Tahoe.

One of the things I love most about this experience is discovering how a familiar local resource can support a completely new adventure. Whether I am out there for a few miles or several hours, I am incredibly grateful for the work that goes into maintaining and protecting the NCR Trail. Every mile helps prepare me for three very big days in the mountains.

If someone had told me a year ago that I would be preparing for an event like this, I wouldn't have believed them. This journey is less about simply finishing TRAIL—though I certainly intend to—and more about training to become the person who can complete it. That transformation is happening right now, one mile at a time, on the NCR Trail.
