MAYOR'S UPDATE
From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin
On Saturday, I was joined by the Ossining Village Board of Trustees, Senator Reichlin-Melnick, Town Supervisor Levenberg, Village Manager D’Attore, and Village Historian Sharrock-Cole to break ground for the COVID-19 Remembrance Memorial at Nelson Sitting Park. We were joined by Nick Franzoso, Chief of the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and our OVAC Volunteers. Their service throughout this long pandemic, along with that of our Police and Fire Departments, was and continues to be invaluable.

The Memorial will include an inviting sitting area meant to encourage reflection while honoring family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hope is to comfort visitors as they mourn the sudden and staggering losses suffered throughout the Ossining community and beyond and help them have space to remember and reflect.

We also encourage residents to share stories about their family, friends, and neighbors through the Ossining Community History Collection Project: Ossining during COVID-19. This project will inform future generations of what everyday life was like during the pandemic.

On Monday, I was invited to join County Executive George Latimer for his COVID press conference. Westchester County has worked with local municipalities to amplify PPE provision, testing, and vaccination services for our residents during the past year. We are grateful for our strong partnership with our County government.

I look forward to continuing to work hand in glove with our friends across all levels of government to ensure Ossining residents are well-equipped to stay safe and healthy during the coming months as we get closer to achieving herd immunity.
What's New This Week

Last year, the Village Board of Trustees discussed updating the Village Seal, representing the Village of Ossining. As part of that discussion, an informal survey took place. Now, we'd like to move forward and obtain a more formal view from our residents regarding their opinion of the Village seal.

In recent years, indigenous persons' use as mascots and seals has come under scrutiny in the United States. Ossining's Village Seal was introduced at a time when "Indians" were popular symbols for schools and other institutions. As times and attitudes evolve, it may be time to reevaluate our Ossining Village Seal.

The survey was developed and approved by all the Trustees and is included here for our community to participate. I encourage you to complete the survey so that we can make the best decision for the people who call Ossining their home.
What’s in front of the Board

In the wake of George Floyd’s needless death, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued Executive Order 203, requiring local police agencies to develop a plan that reinvents and modernizes police strategies and programs based on community input.

This week, the Board of Trustees will be working on the final draft of this Plan. The drafting of the Plan involved countless hours of hard work by our community-driven Police Reform and Reinvention Working Committee, members of our Police Department, community stakeholders, and thoughtful input from residents. The final Plan will be submitted to the Governor’s office by April 1.

This week’s Legislative Session falls on St. Patrick’s Day. Although we will miss the parades and gatherings that are the hallmarks of this holiday, we still celebrate the significant contributions the Irish have made in shaping our communities and our country.

If you are interested in getting one of these units in the future, this is the session for you! We will also discuss Westchester County requirements guiding how and to whom these units will be marketed and how extensive outreach will be planned to ensure compliance with fair housing requirements.
