MHRB, SAMHSA mark Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month in January

This January, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is leading a nationwide push to help Americans learn about the importance of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment—with the observance of SUD Treatment Month. The social media campaign that MHRB will share seeks to help people throughout the United States understand the limitless paths to recovery, the support services that complement treatment, and the importance of having a support system when pursuing recovery.

According to SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 48.4 million people 12 or older (or 16.8%) had a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year; 27.9 million had an alcohol use disorder (AUD); 28.2 million had a drug use disorder (DUD); and 7.7 million people had both an AUD and a DUD. The data also show that, among people 12 or older in 2024 who were classified as needing substance use treatment in the past year, only about 1 in 5 (19.3% or 10.2 million people) received substance use treatment in the past year.

NAMI to hold Family-to-Family classes in first quarter of 2026

If you are a family ,member or caregiver to a person living with mental illness, NAMI Southwest Ohio has a class specifically designed for you.

The Family-to-Family class offers an opportunity for those helping to care for someone living with a mental illness to learn more and share experiences while finding community and care together. NAMI will offer its class at three sites at the start of 2026. For more information or to register, check out their flyer for locations or contact NAMI Southwest Ohio at (513) 351-3500.

Small steps matter:

Check in with our alcohol & drug quiz

If someone's ever told you that you might have an issue with alcohol or drug use, or if you're just curious about whether you might have a problem, the new e-prevention tool on the MHRB website might be a great place to help figure things out.

Anyone can use the surveys anonymously. You'll get feedback on your use of alcohol or substances, tips to curb your consumption, and places to turn for help if you'd like. If you're concerned about a friend or family member, you'll get tips on how to start a conversation. And there is also a general quiz to test your knowledge!

In addition, clients already in treatment will have access to a support app designed to offer access to chat with a live person any time, day or night.

MHRB is one of three Ohio boards using the e-prevention tool and the first in southwest Ohio. To try the tool for yourself, visit the e-Prevention tool page our website.

Can't call in a crisis? Use the Crisis Text Line
