Here Comes September

As we have turned the page to September, like most new school years, there's a familiar feeling of fresh beginnings. Although there is a certain level of comfort, there is also the need to navigate lingering uncertainties, while at the same time stepping into new routines this month. This is a reminder that growth often begins with a little courage and a lot of heart. Just like the classic apple on a teacher’s desk, let it symbolize our shared commitment and resilience to our program, our students, and supporting one another. Here's to starting strong and making this grant year one of progress and positivity!

"Happily we bask in this warm September sun, which illuminates all creatures." ~ Henry David Thoreau

BLOG POST

This year we are starting a new feature for our blog, writers can write a blog or tell us their Top 5! This month we are featuring the Top 5 Books that have influence you, professionally and personally, from Jeannine Warner, Education Programs Professional at NDE. You can read it here!

Year 6 Extension

September 30th

Normally we would have welcomed Year 7 on August 23rd but due to delays in the federal funding and a close review process, Year 6 has been extended until the end of September. Stay tuned for more information from NDE and our grants offices as we work out the additional funding needed for the increased time added to Year 6, and the funding for Year 7. Update: We were just notified that six states had their GEAR UP grants cancelled last week. Thankfully, Nevada was not one of them.

#WhyApply Day

September 19th

The American College Application Campaign (ACAC) will be celebrating #WhyApply Day on Friday, September 19th and so will GEAR UP NV! Nationwide, schools, colleges, and other college access professionals join in the fun in sharing why they applied to college or why they think their students should apply to college. Watch the GEAR UP NV social media platforms on that day to see what we have put together! We are grateful to have had some additional professional expertise and collaboration from the NSHE Public Information Officer, Elizabeth Callahan and her student worker, Ezra Skarlatos, who is a current UNR student.

Year 7 NSHE Intro Events

October

The NSHE institutions will continue our district focused intro events for this year, improving upon the efforts from last year. Once again, we have invited our scholarship partners to attend as well. The current schedule is:

October 14th for CCSD at CSN W. Charleston,

October 23rd at PVHS during teacher conferences, and November 5th at MCHS, also during teacher conferences.

College and Career Fairs

September/October

This year, NDE gave permission for schools to offer their Career and College Fairs during the fall or the spring terms, whichever suited them best. Typically, they were all held in the spring. Taking advantage of this change, the a couple of the CCSD schools will be hosting their fairs in September and October. The first fair will be held at Bonanza High School on September 23rd, followed by Durango High School on October 30th. Clark, Pahrump Valley and Mineral County High Schools will be holding their fairs in the spring.

2nd Annual Nevada FAFSA Challenge

October - March

Yes, there will be another FAFSA completion competition this year! One change for this year is there will be three winners based on senior class size: small 1-199, medium 200-499, and large 500+. More information is available on the website: https://apply.nevada.edu/fafsa-challenge/. Can a GEAR UP school win again?

Mineral County High School Recognized at NSHE Board of Regents Meeting

As has been announced in the Digest previously, Mineral County High School won the first annual Nevada FAFSA Challenge! At the NSHE Board of Regents meeting on September 12th, the school was recognized for this accomplishment and given a banner to display for this school year until the next winner is announced. In attendance were Monica Keady, Principal of MCHS, Stephanie Keuhey, Superintendent of Mineral County School District, Drew Schaar, teacher and GEAR UP partner at MCHS who was instrumental in achieving this success. Kelly Briggs, GBC's GEAR UP First Year College Advisor was also able to attend as was Renee Davis, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs and NSHE GEAR UP PI, and Daniel Archer, Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs who did the actual presentation.

Welcome Vivian!

We have another new addition to the GEAR UP NV team at NDE! Vivian Lathrop is the new Administrative Assistant for GEAR UP! Most of us already had the pleasure of meeting Vivian at the training in Reno. For those of you that missed that opportunity, I'm sure you will see her at one of our upcoming meetings where I am sure we will learn more about her!

Welcome to GEAR UP, Vivian!

Hello to Kaiti!

With much anticipation, we can finally welcome Kaiti Gentry to GEAR UP NV as the new GEAR UP Specialist at Mineral County High School (MCHS)! Following an extended vacancy, we are so excited to have a Specialist at the school again and look forward to working and collaborating with her in the coming year. We also wish to thank Drew Schaar and others at MCHS that worked with us during the spring term.

Welcome aboard, Kaiti!

So Long Shannon!

Unfortunately, it is time to bid a fond farewell to Shannon Yeats, GEAR UP Specialist at Clark High School. Shannon has moved on to a full time counselor role at the school. We will certainly miss seeing Shannon at the various events and activities, although she won't be too far away.

Lots of luck in your new role, Shannon!

National GEAR UP Week

National GEAR UP Week is next week! Beginning on Monday, September 22nd through Friday, September 26th GEAR UP progams will be celebrating and sharing amazing programming with students. This is a great time to plan extra special events. This year, the theme from the annual conference will be carried through GEAR UP week as well. The theme is: Planting Seeds, Growing a Nation. Our high schools and colleges should be planning something special to celebrate!
