Madison East High School Newsletter | Back-To-School Edition - 2025
Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 17, from 5:00-7:00p.m., when we will host our annual Back-to-School Night Open House. This is an excellent opportunity for you to come in, enjoy a meal with our staff, and walk the halls to meet students' teachers. Building these connections is crucial for a successful school year.
During Back-to-School Night, we will also host Standards-Based Learning Information Sessions. These sessions will give families a chance to ask questions and learn more about our new grading and learning system and how it will impact our students.
At East High School, we firmly believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential for student success. Caregiver involvement—whether it's attending school events, volunteering, or simply staying in touch with student's teachers—makes a huge difference.
We also encourage all students and caregivers to utilize the Infinite Campus Portal and App. This site (and app for your mobile device) will give you up-to-date information on students' progress and schedule.
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. My door is always open. We are so excited for the journey ahead and can't wait to make this our best year yet!

Attendance and Excused Absences
Did you know attendance in the first month of school can predict good attendance through the school year?
Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. Find out more on the MMSD Attendance Website. Students can be reported absent using the Infinite Campus Parent Portal or by calling the attendance line (608-204-1650).

Safety, Security & Policies
Various district resources are available online regarding safety, security, emergency procedures and Standard Response Protocol.
Policies and procedures can be found in the District Policy Guide and all board policies are hosted on BoardDocs.
The Behavior Education Plan (BEP) outlines our strategy to support positive student behavior and implement successful systems of support and intervention for students. The BEP is intended to help turn mistakes into learning experiences and to pair consequences with additional support. Page 14 of the BEP provides an overview of the district's progression of discipline.

Electronics Expectations
We know that student cell phone use during class time greatly impacts student engagement and learning. We are committed to making sure our environment is centered around learning. Responsible use of cell phones is one of several strategies that we will work together on to support a strong culture of learning. We will continue to partner with our students, families and staff to ensure that teaching and learning is our top priority and that cell phones are off and away during instruction.
Please review these Electronics Expectations.

The District does not generally provide transportation to high school students. Rather, the District and City of Madison work cooperatively to ensure that Madison Metro Transit routes are available to students as a primary means of transportation. District-provided Madison Metro bus passes are available for students who:
- Reside within the boundaries of the school attendance area
- Reside more than one and one-half (1.5) miles from their attendance area school.
- Have demonstrable financial need, including qualifying for the Free & Reduced Meal Program.
Students who qualify for a district-funded bus pass based on the criteria above can fill out this google form using their district google account to request one and then then pick it up in their Neighborhood Office before school, during lunch, or after school. Note that the student's guardian must have already applied for and been approved for free and reduced meals for the 2025-2026 school year before they can be issued a district-funded bus pass. Students can ride the bus for free during the first weeks of school until they receive their bus pass.
