Whitman Resident Remembers Brockton Symphony Orchestra
My mother Anne F. Joseph and I would attend the Brockton Symphony Orchestra at the High School on Sundays. She was a Brockton Public School, Elementary School Teacher from about 1939-1951, before she married my father February 18, 1950 and after she married and moved to Whitman. I was born January 5, 1952. She died January 17, 2009. I taught 7th Grade at St. Casimir School, Brockton, MA. I am glad the Symphony still plays.

Massasoit Community College to Host Poet Martín Espada

Friday, April 28th

Buckley Performing Arts Center Theater

Join Massasoit in welcoming guest poet Martín Espada for a poetry reading, Q&A, and book signing.
Massasoit Community College will host award-winning poet Martín Espada for a poetry reading, question & answer session, and book signing at the College’s Buckley Center for Performing Arts on April 28 in Brockton from 11a–2p. The event is free and open to the public.
“I believe in community, and I believe in community college. In particular, I believe in poetry, in the humanities, and that community college students should have the same access to the humanities and to poetry as anybody else,” said Espada. “Brockton is the city of champions, from Rocky Marciano to Marvin Hagler. Maybe there is a champion poet waiting to emerge from Brockton, too. The last reading I did before the pandemic shut everything down in March 2020 was at Massasoit Community College. I look forward to my return.”

Martín Espada is the winner of the 2021 National Book Award for his work Floaters. A professor at UMass Amherst, Espada’s works have gained national attention, critical praise, and have won many awards. In 2018, the Poetry Foundation awarded him the 2018 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, which honors a living US poet for outstanding lifetime achievement. Espada was invited to campus by the College’s Department of English, with funding from the College’s SUCCESS program, as a part of its recognition of National Poetry Month. Climate Can-Do: Speaking Up for Nature

There will always be a struggle to balance society and nature; but we, as the society, have a say in how our environment is treated. We can speak up. We know keeping our environment healthy affects our quality of life. One action we can take is let our local government know we care.

Local senators and representatives keep count of how many people contact them per issue. Because so many people spoke up about the algae blooms in Monponsett Pond (Halifax), it took a mere few years to clean it up. When we work together, we take important steps in caring for our earth. One active campaign right now is prevent radioactive waste from the decommissioned Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant from being dumped into Plymouth Bay. For more information, visit: www.saveourbayma.com.

Doing our part isn’t only about limiting our environmental footprint– it’s about community, and caring for every living thing within it. Advocating for our environment is one of the most crucial things that can be done. Contact local government officials and join in campaigns like Save Our Bay. Helping the planet is just a few steps away.

Happy Spring Holidays to the
Whitman Police Department from the Community!

Fun FB interaction as the Whitman Police Department posted "thanks" for treats: " We Love Holidays, and we Love our supportive community!
Thank You to the Miller Family for these amazing treats! They will be put to good use.
Riley Miller was the focus of one of our posts on June 13, 2022 for his awesome charitable work for the Best Buddies Organization.

Also, thank you to the anonymous person who gave us the cute rock with the kind message. A much nicer message than most that are attached to rocks."

Riley Miller continues to be hard at work, raising money for scholarships & the Best Buddies Organization. The Rocket Riley Redemption Project is giving out their second scholarship on 5/31. Thom & Riley will pick up your cans/bottles curbside. On their way to 100,000 cans! Contact Thom by direct message through his Facebook account facebook.com/thom.miller.547 to arrange a pick up.

April is Poetry Month
Hmm. Poetry? You ask. Of course.

Poetry can express emotion and ideas in thoughtful and delicate ways, or in pounding stark ways. I thoroughly enjoy the unusual use of words. It taps into that which seems elusive. And so, for poetry month, let's look at poets!
Here; dive into Langston Hughes:

“Gather out of star-dust,
Earth-dust,
Cloud-dust,
Storm-dust,
And splinters of hail,
One handful of dream-dust,
Not for sale.”

"Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly."

“Oh, God of Dust and Rainbows,
Help us to see
That without the dust the rainbow
Would not be.”

“Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now --
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.”
Also, here is a great site for exploring poets. poets.org

You are a poem, after all. Shine. Live life completely.
