A Prayer for Every Day

I greet this auspicious day and allow the past to fall away…

Sometimes I fail to live what I know

May I now live in compassionate awareness

Sometimes I judge the actions of others

May I now hear their story and grow my love

Sometimes I fail to care for myself

May I now nurture and value my presence

Sometimes I hide in darkness

May I now feel the warm sun dawn in my heart

Now that I’ve rekindled compassion for myself and others

I aspire to help relieve suffering in the world

—while planting seeds of joy

I greet this auspicious day and allow the past to fall away…

(A prayer spontaneously written by an aging Dharma bum called Michael)

We experience joy in forming the intention to be generous.

We experience joy in the actual act of giving something.

And we experience joy in remembering the fact that we have given."
