I am incredibly honored and humbled as I begin a new chapter in my life as the President of John Muir Health Foundation.

You are a passionate believer and generous long-time supporter of the people, programs and services of John Muir Health. And I know that because of you, John Muir Health has become a world-class health care provider offering the most technically-advanced treatments and technologies to patients in the Bay Area.

My background in philanthropy at Rutgers, NC State University, Yale School of Management, and the University of Connecticut, will help lay the groundwork for my foray into health care philanthropy, having learned to harness donors’ passions into stable, long-term relationships that are mutually beneficial to both parties (and not dependent on the success of the football team from year to year!)

My ultimate goal is to collaborate closely with you, John Muir Health executive leadership, providers, staff, and volunteers to carry on the mission of John Muir Health — to improve the health of the communities we serve with quality and compassion. Additionally, I earnestly believe we can amplify the impact philanthropy can make on our community by changing the paradigm of fundraising for this extraordinary East Bay health care system.

I look forward to doing great things together!

Yours in health,
Nevin E. Kessler

Diabetes Education and
Empowerment Program (DEEP)
John Muir Health’s Community Benefit Diabetes Program is made possible through the generosity of Eileen and Elliot D. Stein. Through John Muir Health-led programs such as the Diabetes Education and Empowerment Program (DEEP), and strong partnerships with community-based nonprofit organizations, clinics, and other health care providers, local underserved residents now have access to quality diabetes care.
Eileen and Elliot Stein are in DEEP
While we have all been focused on the pandemic, the diabetes epidemic continues to rage. These last two years have shown us that men and women with diabetes, particularly those in traditionally underserved populations, have had far greater incidences of complications from COVID-19 and significantly higher rates of mortality.

“Until there is a cure, there must be more focus on education about prevention of diabetes and how to live a healthier lifestyle," explains Elliot Stein, a John Muir Health Foundation Board Member and diabetic. "It is incumbent on us as a community to help ensure that access to information and quality health care is available for the most vulnerable among us."

Elliot and Eileen believe that providing education for the prevention of diabetes among those who are at the most risk for developing it, and ensuring folks in our most at-risk communities have the resources they need for their successful management of this chronic disease, is vitally important.

And gratefully, Elliot and Eileen are all about walking the talk! They have generously provided the seed funding for a collaborative effort of the John Muir Health Diabetes Center, Community Health Improvement, and John Muir Health Family Medicine Residency Program, to provide diabetes education, clinical services, and supplies to underserved populations.

With their help, John Muir Health has launched the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program, or DEEP™, an education curriculum designed to help people with pre-diabetes, diabetes and their relatives and caregivers, gain a better understanding of diabetes self-care. Classes span six weeks, are free, and provide participants with eight unique learning modules.

Annual Gala Raises $2 Million
for Medical Intensive Care
at John Muir Health

John Muir Health’s annual flagship fundraiser, Celebrate John Muir Health! gala was held virtually in November, 2021. The event raised more than $2 million in support of John Muir Health’s Medical Intensive Care and was dedicated to the heroic efforts of team members who care for the sickest patients in our community.

Antonio and his mother know all about these dedicated heroes. They were both near death from the COVID-19 virus and in beds just doors away from each other in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at John Muir Health. "I will forever be grateful for them," says Antonio.

This area within our Medical Centers provides interdisciplinary care for patients with a variety of serious medical conditions in a technologically-advanced environment. And unlike most community hospitals, a Critical Care Specialist is available around-the-clock, seven days per week.

The community came together in a very big way at the Gala to support John Muir Health’s Medical Intensive Care. “Philanthropy has definitely benefited Medical Intensive Care,” says Girlynda Gonzales, R.N., Vice President, Inpatient Care Services, John Muir Health. “Support from the community is the wind beneath our wings and helps keep us uplifted in very difficult times.”

NOW is the Time
for Revolutionizing Cancer Care

The Cancer Pavilion, home to the UCSF-John Muir Health Cancer Center, is under construction and targeted to open in February 2024. It will be the central hub for an integrated network of cancer care sites throughout the East Bay, including Berkeley, Brentwood, and Pleasanton.

In partnership with UCSF, we are creating a revolutionary cancer care network that will:

  • Serve the cancer care needs of patients in our community
  • Change the way we care for East Bay regional cancer patients
  • Create a seamless patient experience focused on what is best for those fighting for their lives—for patients, their families, and for our greater Bay Area community

The HUB of this network is a world-class facility in Walnut Creek with an integrated care model that will:

  • Provide leading-edge services Close to Home
  • Improve patient outcomes in an integrated environment
  • Expand access to clinical trials and research
  • Enhance prevention, diagnosis and treatment

Current statistics show that four in every ten Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

NOW is the absolute right time to meet this rapidly rising disease rate. We are beginning a new era of world-class, cohesive care in Walnut Creek to help those loved ones and neighbors who will face complex and unique cancer diagnoses.

Right Here. Right Now.
