Michigan Swimming News & Updates

Message from MISI General Chair

Greetings to all members, staff, and volunteers of Michigan Swimming (MISI)! Looking forward to a positive and productive term of service, which began January 2026, as the General Chair. MISI is successful as an organization when we come together with achievable goals and clarity of purpose. Our mission of “Integrity, Inclusion, Education, Excellence” provides the guideposts as we move forward.

Thank you to our current staff, Board of Directors, and members. A very special thank you to our members, past and present, especially Karen Schwartz and Joe Gazzarato, who have served in volunteer roles within our organization and have shared their time, energy, and experience over the years.

After conducting a brief survey among past and current BoD and committee members, several priorities emerged for the LSC. Most notable were: improve communication across the LSC; develop and publish a strategic plan for the LSC; improve alignment of LSC championship meet schedule with the regional and national schedule; increase the number of certified officials in our LSC; develop a comprehensive camp and clinic program for the LSC; and improve support for elite-level swimmers and improve overall athlete retention in the LSC.

Actions being taken include: reforming LSC committees and recruiting enthusiastic, experienced, and educated members to serve; developing a plan of camps and clinics that serve all levels of our LSC; formulating the key components of our short- and long-term strategic plan; approving and promoting USA Swimming and MISI grant opportunities for member teams; and increasing the communication across the LSC through this bi-weekly newsletter. As a member of the LSC, your input is welcomed as we plan for future successes.

This newsletter is being used to keep all members up to date on LSC actions, plans, and progress towards the priorities listed (and any others that merit consideration). We look to our coaches and athletes for major contributions to this hub of information.

Best wishes for a successful short-course season and watch this newsletter on a bi-weekly basis for communication from the BoD, committees, and members of MISI!

Best regards,

Vince Gallant, General Chair MISI

Athlete Report from USA Swimming National Select Camp, December 2025

Three of Michigan Swimming’s aspiring and accomplished athletes qualified and were invited to attend USA Swimming’s National Select Camp, held in Colorado Springs at the USA Olympic Training Center, in mid-December of this past year. In order to qualify, swimmers had to post top times in long course meters races: Jayla Kuzak (LCSC), 400m IM; Aubriel McKay (OLY), 100m fly; and Ella Hafner (PA), 400 m free, accepted their invitations to the camp. They were joined by their home club coaches Karl Shafer (LCSC), Adam Cooper (OLY), and Christine Hafner (PA). The four-day camp included dryland and swim training, plus motivational and high performance education.

Report from Jayla Kuzak: “I was chosen to go to the Girls’ National Select Camp with Aubrial Mackay and Ella Hafner from Michigan Swimming. It was such a great experience, meeting the best swimmers and coaches from across the country, and becoming a team for a weekend. Spending three days with this team allowed me to make friends that will last a lifetime, which is something I’m truly grateful for. The coaches and staff were the ones working behind the scenes to make this an unforgettable experience. Meeting Olympian Emma Weyant and hearing her swimming experience as a professional taught me a lot about swimming. This camp inspired me in so many ways and only opened my eyes more to the world of swimming.”

Report from Aubrial Mackay: “I got selected for the national select camp in Colorado for my performance in the 100m Butterfly. I am so blessed to have gotten to experience this with so many amazing girls. They inspired me to push myself more than before and grow into who God is creating me to be. The girls were so positive and such a joy to be around. It was also so amazing to get a taste of what swimming in the future could possibly hold. I’ve always loved pushing my body to the absolute max and I am now even more motivated after all the meetings on nutrition, a national team member speaking to us on how to become a better athlete in general. All glory and honor to God. He is so so good to me and has blessed me beyond measure. “

Report from Ella Hafner: “I was selected to attend the USA Swimming National Select Camp alongside two other Michigan swimmers, Aubrial Mackay, and Jayla Kuzak. The camp took place at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The once in a lifetime experience was amazing! I learned so much while I was at camp. “While there, I met and swam with some of the best swimmers my age from around the country who have the same goals in mind. Being with these girls taught me so much about hard work, leadership, and dedication. I am so honored to have been part of this camp and to have been able to attend such a life changing opportunity. “We met some amazing swimmers from USA Swimming, like Brendan Hansen and people from USADA. At camp, we had practice, did lots of activities, listened to many speakers and made so many memories. This select camp through USA Swimming was amazing and is an experience of a lifetime that I will never forget!”

Qualifying for a USA Swimming National Select Camp is a rare and special opportunity that requires years of preparation from the athlete and dedication of a supportive home and swim environment. Congratulations and thank you Jayla, Aubriel, and Ella for your accomplishments and sharing a brief version of your adventure in Colorado Springs!

Mid-State All Star Meet Report

Team Michigan delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Mid-State All-Star Championships, combining fast swimming with an unforgettable team experience. Beyond the results, the weekend was filled with fun, new friendships, and a team atmosphere that truly reflected the spirit of Michigan Swimming. Swimmers supported one another throughout the meet, and the energy on deck translated into strong performances in the pool, with a large portion of the team posting personal best times.

The competitive results were equally impressive, as Team Michigan earned its best overall team finish since 2018 at 3rd place. Lots of Michigan swimmers made it into the top 16. Our athletes captured a plethora of medals across the meet, with quite a few of them being gold. The team competed with confidence and determination from start to finish, showcasing both depth and talent across all events and relays.

Gold medal performances came from Clara Lauritzen (in all six of her individual events), Greg Flermoen (including a meet record in the 100 fly), Bo Feenstra, Lulu Flynn, Liesl Roberts, Ronan Cusack, Finn Kelly, Jun Park, and Oliver Pierce. Other medal-earning performances came from Claire Dewitte, Benny Dunbar, Jovy Edwards, Sam Eroh, Brooks Gillis, Claire Gostlin, Piper Heavner, Theo Hovord, Addi Kendrick, Poppy Lacrosse, August Le, Ethan Lesnau, Tucker Lovasz, Kallen McDowall, Nola Molter, Melanie Ortiz, Miranda Phelps, Charlie Roberts, Luke VanWoerkom, Everett Vollmer, Leah Yeon, and Ryan Yu.

Overall, the Mid-State All-Star Meet continues to be a fantastic opportunity for swimmers to compete at a high level while building camaraderie across clubs and states. The enthusiasm, teamwork, and success we witnessed this year make it clear that this event is a highlight of Team Michigan opportunities.
