Singing together helps children develop language skills by slowing down words to better hear the individual sounds and introducing vocabulary that might not appear in everyday speech. Many songs will incorporate movement and opportunities to practice listening and following directions with props like shakers or scarves.

We'll repeat the same set of songs for several weeks at a time so everyone has a chance to learn the lyrics that are new to them.

Without music, life would b-flat!

Alicia Recommends:

The Sweater by Larissa Theule

When a raccoon named Molly goes for a walk in the woods one day, she runs into a little bird who's struggling. With beautiful, almost vintage-feeling illustrations and writing, Molly rallies the local community of animals to work together to help their new friend. As the seasons change, the little bird starts to get stronger and so does the whole community. I was really moved by how beautiful and simple the story of community and helping each other was and it kind of reminded me of a Mr. Rogers-esque vision of what a world of “helpers” looks like.

Alissa Recommends:

Mixed Feelings by Sara Amini

Sara is Iranian and Columbian, and yet somehow is not enough of either to feel like she belongs in either culture. No one realizes that she is Latina, and the girls in her Farsi class treat her with distain. And then her best friend makes a new friend and starts to drift away. Sara finally starts to feel like she belongs when she signs up for the school's drama club. This semi-autobiographical graphic novel celebrates multicultural families and is filled with relatable struggles of changing friendships and finding ones voice. Perfect for fans of Betty C. Tang's Parachute Kids or fans of friendship stories like Raina Telgemeier or Shannon Hale.
