All the baby chicks you want! His pullets (young female chickens) lay their eggs earliest. Important to know - you don't want to wait 9 months for that first egg!

Climate Can Do: Overconsumption and Sustainable Practices
What Is Overconsumption?
Overconsumption is the excessive consumption or use of something. Without change we could eventually run out, or create more than we can dispose of.
How Can We Help?
Live sustainably, make lifestyle choices that help you and the planet. Small changes make a big impact:
*Walk, bike or take public transportation whenever possible!
*Consider alternatives to single use items:
- A reusable shopping bag.
- Skip the plastic bottles; all sorts of reusable bottles can be found in metal, glass and recycled plastic
- Replace Saran Wrap with wraps made from beeswax, cotton, and tree oil that keep food fresher and can be reused repeatedly.
- Use reusable towels instead of paper towels.
*Consider eating 2 or 3 meatless dinners / week:
Don’t throw away leftovers; eating leftovers will help you avoid food waste and save you money. Freeze pre-made meals for handy eating later.
*Rather than replacing, repair.
Do not automatically discard broken items when they break. Instead, try repairing it. Using this method can save you money and reduce landfill waste. Repair shops and Youtube Videos are readily available to help you fix things.
*Join Buy Nothing.
With Buy Nothing, you can get rid of unwanted things around your house and get things you need for free. As their motto states “Buy Nothing. Share Everything,” a sustainable living app aimed at the community.
*Shop local.
By shopping locally, you reduce the impact of transportation on the environment and support your local economy.

Merrill Attendance All-Star Ceremony 08/14/24 | |
|
Merrill Elementary School in Raynham, MA, recently celebrated its remarkable achievement of reducing chronic absenteeism during an Attendance All-Star Ceremony held on August 14, 2024. This event recognized the school's accomplishment as one of the top ten schools in Massachusetts for improving student attendance, a significant feat that earned them praise from both local and state-level officials.
Among the special guests at the ceremony were several key figures from the community and the state. The Undersecretary of Education for Massachusetts, Mark Riley, a proud Raynham native and graduate of the Bridgewater-Raynham school system, took part in the celebration. He expressed how meaningful it was for him to return to his hometown to honor the school's efforts in bringing students back to the classroom. Mr. Riley emphasized the importance of collaboration between the school, students, and families in achieving this success. He also highlighted the value of daily school attendance as a key component of educational success.
| | |
|
Also in attendance was Rachel Herry from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), who shared insights about the statewide initiative to combat chronic absenteeism, especially in light of challenges posed by the pandemic. Ms. Herry commended Merrill Elementary's reduction in chronic absence by nearly 19% from March to May 2023, bringing them to the forefront of the state's attendance efforts.
The town of Raynham was represented by members of the Board of Selectmen, including Pat Riley and Gregory Barnes, who proudly supported the school and celebrated with the students, families, and staff. The Bridgewater-Raynham School Committee also participated, with Chair Tim Fitzgibbons leading the ceremony’s interactive segments that included enthusiastic cheers from the students about their favorite parts of school life.
In a special moment, the school was presented with a basketball signed by the Boston Celtics, a symbol of recognition for the dedication of the students, teachers, and parents in fostering a positive and supportive educational environment. This basketball will be displayed at Merrill Elementary as a reminder of the hard work and commitment that led to this milestone.
As the ceremony came to a close, students enjoyed sweet treats and took turns posing for photos with the Celtics-signed basketball, celebrating their triumph as Merrill Cubs Attendance All-Stars.
This event not only marked a significant achievement for the school but also set a positive tone for the upcoming academic year, with hopes of continuing their progress in promoting excellent attendance and a love of learning.

Sisterhood
“Once upon a time there were two sisters. One of them was really, really strong, and one of them wasn't.' You looked at me. 'Your turn.'
I rolled my eyes. 'The strong sister went outside into the rain and realized the reason she was strong was because she was made out of iron, but it was raining and she rusted. The end.'
No, because the sister who wasn't strong went outside into the rain when it was raining, and hugged her really tight until the sun came out again.”
~ Jodi Picoult, Handle with Care
"Women who understand how powerful they are do not give into envy over meaningless things, instead they fight to maintain the beautiful bond of the sisterhood. These are the real women who know that we need each other's love & support to survive in this world. Love is the essence of being a woman. We must be that light of love that seals the bond & unique beauty of our sisterhood." ~ Bindu

Sisters, we must listen to each other, love one another and stand up for each other... if not us, then who?
