Last Week at Saint Matthias
There were 159 parishioners at 5 services: Bible Study on Wednesday at 10AM, The Celebration of Life: Kathleen P. Bias on Saturday at 11AM, the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost at 8AM; and the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost at 10AM, the Prayer Vigil on Sunday at 11:45AM.
There were 77 guests of Doing the Loving Thing served by 5 volunteers, some of whom served multiple times.
Thank you to Peter Alamillo, Joan Krave, Wei-San Mohindar with the lovely Canela, and Sue Williams for contributing their time and talent 'Doing the Loving Thing' to support those in need in our community seeking food, assistance, and love. The light is definitely shining through all of them.
Thank you to Sue Williams for collating the worship bulletins as she does faithfully each week.
A loving Saint Matthias 'tip of the hat' to the members of The Stitchery Group who hosted the celebration of our September anniversaries and birthdays.

All are welcome to attend any session that is designated as ‘all welcome,’ even if you are not a voting delegate at the Diocesan Convention. If you are unable to attend in person, four of the sessions will be available via Zoom. The Zoom link will be posted the day before each session.
Spanish-language translation will also be available at two of the gatherings.
Attendees are asked to register here so the committee will know how many to prepare for at each location.
Questions for the candidates may be asked in person or submitted in advance by e-mail to transitionscommittee@gmail.com. Committee members plan to accommodate as many questions as many as possible.

Celebration
Estate of John August Swanson, https://www.johnaugustswanson.com/
Joyous Visitation of our Diocesan Bishop to Saint Matthias
John Harvey Taylor, the Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, will be presiding at the 10AM Service on Sunday, October 5. This will probably mark Bishop Taylor's final visit to Saint Matthias before his retirement. This offers a wonderful opportunity for any of our beloved Saint Matthians and friends of Saint Matthias to be confirmed or re-affirmed. In order to plan for this effectively, please speak with Reverend Carole, if you wish to be confirmed or re-affirmed by the Bishop.
To prepare for Episcopalian confirmation or re-affirmation, focus on these key areas:
- Understand the significance of confirmation as a mature affirmation of faith.
- Familiarize yourself with the Book of Common Prayer and its role in worship.
- Study the core beliefs of the Episcopal Church, including the Nicene Creed.
- Learn about the sacraments, especially baptism and Eucharist.
- Explore the history and structure of the Episcopal Church.
- Engage in community service and outreach as a reflection of your faith

Pentecost
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Buchengasse_11.JPG
The Season of Pentecost
The season after Pentecost, according to the calendar of the church year (BCP, p. 32). It begins on the Monday following Pentecost and continues through most of the summer and autumn. It may include as many as twenty-eight Sundays, depending on the date of Easter. This includes Trinity Sunday which is the First Sunday after Pentecost. The BCP provides proper collects and readings for the other Sundays of the season. These propers are numbered and designated for use on the Sundays which are closest to specific days in the monthly calendar, whether before or after. For example, Proper 3 is designated for use, if needed, on the Sunday closest to May 25. Proper 29 is designated for use on the Sunday closest to Nov. 23. Prior to the 1979 BCP, Sundays in this long period of the church year were identified and counted in terms of the number of Sundays after Trinity Sunday instead of the number of Sundays after Pentecost. This period is also understood by some as “ordinary time,” a period of the church year not dedicated to a particular season or observance, as in the Roman Rite adapted after Vatican II.
Ordinary Time
This term is used in the Roman Catholic Church to indicate the parts of the liturgical year that are not included in the major seasons of the church calendar. Ordinary time includes the Monday after the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord through the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, and the Monday after Pentecost through the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. A vigil or other service anticipating the First Sunday of Advent on the Saturday before that Sunday would also be included in the season of Advent. Ordinary time can be understood in terms of the living out of Christian faith and the meaning of Christ’s resurrection in ordinary life. The term “ordinary time” is not used in the Prayer Book, but the season after Pentecost can be considered ordinary time. It may be referred to as the “green season,” because green is the usual liturgical color for this period of the church year. The BCP provides numbered propers with collects and lectionary readings for the Sundays of the Season after Pentecost. The Epiphany season includes the Epiphany, the First Sunday after the Epiphany: the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Second Sunday through the Last Sunday after the Epiphany (BCP, p. 31). In view of the Epiphany themes that are presented throughout the Epiphany season, it should not be considered ordinary time. However, many parishes use green as the liturgical color for the Second Sunday through the Sunday prior to the Last Sunday after the Epiphany, and sometimes the Last Sunday after the Epiphany. Epiphany season and the season after Pentecost vary in length depending on the date of Easter (see BCP, pp. 884-885).
Pentecost 14 (C) – September 14, 2025 (Proper 19)
RCL Track 2: Exodus 32:7-14, Psalm 51:1-11, 1 Timothy 1:12-17, Luke 15:1-10
Old Testament
Exodus 32:7-14
The Lord said to Moses, "Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, `These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!'" The Lord said to Moses, "I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation."
But Moses implored the Lord his God, and said, "O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, `It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, `I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.'" And the Lord changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people.
The Psalm
Psalm 51:1-11
Miserere mei, Deus
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness; *
in your great compassion blot out my offenses.
2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness *
and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions, *
and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against you only have I sinned *
and done what is evil in your sight.
5 And so you are justified when you speak *
and upright in your judgment.
6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, *
a sinner from my mother's womb.
7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me, *
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.
8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; *
wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.
9 Make me hear of joy and gladness, *
that the body you have broken may rejoice.
10 Hide your face from my sins *
and blot out all my iniquities.
11 Create in me a clean heart, O God, *
and renew a right spirit within me.
The Epistle
1 Timothy 1:12-17
I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-- of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
The Gospel
Luke 15:1-10
All the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, "This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them."
So he told them this parable: "Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, `Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.' Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
"Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, `Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.' Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
