Finding a Healthy Summer Balance
We hope our students are enjoying their summer and finding time to unplug, play, and have fun. For kids with learning differences, the "summer slide" is a real concern, but the cognitive fatigue they experience during the school year is also much higher than that of traditional learners. Our kids need to recharge.
Neuroscience shows that students who learn differently expend an immense amount of mental energy every day. True downtime isn't a luxury; it is a neurological necessity that allows the brain to reduce stress and replenish th e mental stamina needed for the coming year.
The key to avoiding the summer slide while protecting their mental well-being is a low-pressure balance. We absolutely want our students to keep reading, but we encourage families to redefine what literacy looks like:
-
Embrace Audiobooks: Listening to a story builds vocabulary and comprehension skills without the fatigue of decoding text.
-
Read Aloud Together: Shared family reading keeps the joy of storytelling alive and takes the pressure off the child.
-
Follow Their Interests: Graphic novels, comic books, and magazines all count. If they love the topic, their brains are engaged.
By protecting your child’s time to unplug, get outside, and just be a kid, you aren't falling behind—you are giving them the foundation they need to return to school confident, refreshed, and ready to learn.
We want to see what our Trident Academy students are up to! Whether you're traveling, working a summer job, or just hanging out, send your favorite summer pictures to Hallie at hmendoza@tridentacademy.com. Please include a brief caption with who is in the photo so we can feature them in our next newsletter!
Have a wonderful, restful summer!
