SHOPPING REMINDER DAY
Shopping Reminder Day kicks off an unofficial countdown of sorts. Whether you're finishing up or just getting started, holiday shopping is a task that either stresses people or excites them.
For those who look forward to holiday shopping, the idea of finding the perfect gift for someone they love tickles them with energy. However, others like the thrill of the hunt for deals. Still, others just love the energy of giving during the holidays.
On the flip side, those who dread holiday shopping dread the crowds and traffic. Budget constraints and the commercialism drive them indoors.
Somewhere there must be a balance for all of us. We select the gifts with meaning and fulfill the expectations while keeping those who need the most in mind during this holiday season.
If you have holiday shopping to complete, this day is here to remind you there are only so many days left.
- There are 30 days until Christmas.
- There are 31 days until the start of Kwanzaa.
- There are 15 days until the start of Hanukkah.

The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.

Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans-based sextet that specializes in ‘jump’, the jazz-based rhythm and blues that bridged the gap between swing and rock & roll. To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience.

Lagniappe Brass Band
The term Lagniappe comes from cajun French for “a little something extra.” Started in 2010, Lagniappe Brass Band was just an idea that quickly grew into something much more. Through our time, we have had the pleasure of playing around the United States, Canada, and have done several overseas tours in Spain and France.
Verterans of getting funky and bringing that soulful New Orleans brass, we’re done countless festivals and are a huge lover of the music culture in New Orleans.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 25
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL PARFAIT DAY
National Parfait Day kicks off breakfast, lunch, snack, or dessert just right on November 25th! This versatile dish serves up sweet or healthy in layers of goodness.
Usually served in a specially styled glass, a parfait presents ingredients in appealing layers. Fruit, yogurt, or ice cream provide the basis for transitions between nuts, chocolate, or even whipped cream.
A French word that literally means "perfect" was originally used to describe a kind of frozen dessert beginning in 1894.
In the United States, most restaurants and ice cream shops serve parfaits in the traditional French style. They use ingredients such as parfait cream, ice cream, gelato, or pudding and layer them in a tall clear glass. To finish the parfait, a dollop of whipped cream is added or even fresh fruit or a drizzle of flavored liqueur.
The Northern United States expanded on the parfait and began to use yogurt layered with nuts or granola or fresh fruits. Some of the fruits include but are not limited to strawberries, blueberries, bananas, or peaches. The idea spread quickly across all parts of the country, and the yogurt parfait gained popularity as a breakfast item.
Over the years, combinations changed. Now parfaits are made up of almost any dessert mixture that works well layered in a tall, clear glass. Some popular ingredients include:
- Cake and cookie pieces
- Pretzel and cookie pieces
- Oatmeal, nuts, seeds
- Gelatin, pudding, cream fillings
- Coconut, chocolate chips

What was the original name of Levi Strauss' blue jeans?
Denim Dungarees
Gold Miner Pants
Blue Rivets
Waist Overalls
Levi Strauss & Co.'s blue jeans were originally called "waist overalls" or "overalls" until 1960. The term "jeans" became popular in the 1950s after James Dean wore them in Rebel Without a Cause and they became a symbol of youth rebellion.

November 25th Celebrated History
1884
Henri Nestlé registered the Nestlé trademark for condensed milk.
1924
The United States Patent and Trademark Office granted International Cellucotton Products Company the trademark for Kleenex. It's interesting to note, that unlike Nestlé, the brand name Kleenex became universally used for the type of product Kleenex was - a tissue. The use of such eponyms often happens when a product becomes a household name. For example, we Xerox to make copies, even if we're not using a Xerox machine. In the winter, we coat our lips with Chapstick but the brand of lip balm we're really using might be something else. And if you're Googling an eponym right now, what search engine are you using? Oh, and chocolate isn't a brand name of any kind and Nestlé never replaced it.
1975
Robert S. Ledley Received patent No. 3,922,552 for what became known as the Automatic Computerized Transverse Axial or first Whole-Body Computerized Tomography Scanner.
1987
The comedy starring Steve Martin and John Candy, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles premiered in U.S. theaters. Written and directed by John Hughes, the holiday film follows two unlikely companions as they travel home for the holidays.
November 25th Celebrated Birthdays
Andrew Carnegie - 1935
The steel industry made him a millionaire in the late 19th century. Then Carnegie turned his interests toward philanthropy, developing libraries, advancing education and supporting his cause for peace.
Karl Benz - 1844
In 1885 after many setbacks, Benz succeeded in building the world's first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine.
Carrie Nation - 1846
The radical temperance activist became notorious for attacking bars and taverns, often wreaking havoc with her hatchet on her mission to end alcohol use.
Sybil Stockdale - 1924
The wife of POW Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale, Sybil fought for better treatment of POWs.
John F. Kennedy Jr. - 1960
The son of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy founded the magazine, George. Kennedy died in a plane accident in 1999 and the magazine folded two years later.

At that stroke of midnight on November 21, 2024, oenophiles all over France will begin their jubilant celebration in honor of the end of the harvest and the uncorking of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Hundreds of events throughout France will be held with fireworks, music, and, of course, tastings, as “tout le monde” vie to sample the current batch of Beaujolais Nouveau - light, fruit-driven wines made with barely fermented Gamay grapes that are best consumed as soon as possible - literally. But, never fear, there are 3 different quality levels of Beaujolais above Nouveau and these are the ones we get excited about!
The entry-level wines that are simply labeled Beaujolais, are made from grapes grown throughout the Beaujolais region, mainly in the south. These also tend to be on the fruit-forward side and are meant to be enjoyed in the first year or two after the vintage. Beaujolais-Villages wines are based on Gamay grapes that were grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, specifically 38 permitted villages. And Cru Beaujolais are grown in any of ten specific northern locales whose typically granitic soils (though they are far from uniform in composition and character) can produce the most age-worthy and complex of all red wines from Beaujolais. So, needless to say, the least expensive wines generally come from the south, and the more expensive and age-worthy wines come from the north. And if this was all you learned about Beaujolais, you’d know enough to dive in and start learning by tasting - but as always goes with wine, a lot of the fun is in the details.
We are here to help with those details as we taste different wines from the 3 categories and talk about the terroir that makes them special. What is Beaujolais Blanc? What is the difference between a village-level wine and a cru? What's the stylistic difference between one Cru and another?? David Sobiesk will present as we learn about one of our favorite regions and pick out some of the best wines ever to pair with your holiday meals! The event is sold out but you can join our waitlist here, Gamay
Learn a little, drink a little, and have some fun with us!

New Orleans holiday parade 2024 will fill the streets with hot-air balloons. See the details.
Children's Hospital sponsors this procession, featuring Frosty, Rudolph and more.

For the third year, the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will get the yuletide season rolling, Crescent City style. With 30 themed floats, ridden by costumers tossing a blizzard of throws, plus 27 bands and marching groups, the parade is like a preview of Carnival. But there’s a difference.
No other New Orleans procession includes giant lighter-than-air balloons, bobbing along the route amid the other attractions. In the past two years, a 40-foot Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, a gargantuan candy cane, a snowflake, a gingerbread man, a Hanukkah ornament and Frosty the Snowman have floated over the crowds.
This year, parade producer Barry Kern promises there will be a few new balloons in the mix. In addition to floats bearing a red toy train, a Christmas alligator and Santa on his sled, Kern said parade-goers should look for giant self-propelled snow globes this year.
The parade rolls through the French Quarter and the Central Business District at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7.
Patients at Children’s Hospital are creating custom-decorated plastic ornaments that will serve as signature throws this year. Each ornament will be marked with the patient’s name.
Rolling fundraiser
Unlike the Mardi Gras season, during which commercial advertising is prohibited, the floats in the holiday parade are sponsored by businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the commercial tie-ins benefit Children’s Hospital. WDSU television plans a telethon-style broadcast to accompany the event.
With support from the state’s Explore Louisiana tourism campaign, the parade is meant to help promote New Orleans as a holiday season destination, according to parade organizers.
Grinchy power lines and rain
The first two Children’s Hospital Holiday Parades succeeded despite complications. During the first parade, the hovering balloons were forced to limbo beneath streetcar power lines on St. Charles Avenue, slowing the procession. The problem led to a new route in the second year. Rain pelted the 2023 parade, though the event still drew crowds.
Unlike in past years, there will be no post-parade party in Lafayette Square.
The parade will line up on Elysian Fields Avenue near Washington Square Park. It will proceed uptown on North Peters Street, merge onto Decatur Street, turn right on Canal Street, U-turn at Burgundy Street, turn right on Tchoupitoulas Street, ending at Andrew Higgins Drive.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
