Daring to Have a Great Summer!

Kids Across Plymouth County gathered at Whitman Hanson High School for the Summer D.A.R.E program. Sponsored by the Plymouth County District Attorneys office, the children learned to be good leaders and resist violence and drugs. This year the high school hosted 650 kids for the program. Some themes for each day included Crazy Hat Day, Camp Olympics, and Water Day. The Whitman Fire Department drenched the place with cool water, which was more than welcome due to the super-hot weather. Throughout the week, fun games and activities including potato sack races, tug-of-war, and wheelbarrow races encourage teamwork. Local businesses' food helped ensure the kids were happy and fed throughout the day.

A fun and furry guest this week was Nola. Nola came nearly every day and participated the way she knew how by being adorable and letting everyone say hello and pet her. On Crazy Hat Day, she came with her crazy hat. She may be small, but she is making a big impact in the community. Thanks to everybody who came and volunteered, especially the peer leaders.

Whitman Boy Reported Safe

During my clean out all these past months I found these papers in a trunk that belonged to my Dad who was in the Navy during WWII. The Brockton Enterprise is dated May 7, 1945 and The Victory Woonsocket Call is dated May 8, 1945. My dad came from Woonsocket my Mom from Whitman. The piece on the Whitman soldier found was in the same Enterprise. A long almost six years from the start in Poland on September 1, 1939.

Top image: "Whitman, May 7th- Reported safe in January, while serving as a radio operator with Gen. Patton's forces. It was learned to-day that Sgt. John J. Kirby, son of Judge and the late Mrs. James T. Kirby of Whitman, has been liberated from a German prison camp. The information came in a letter, written by Sgt. Kirby on Feb 22. Sgt. Kirby, the father of a young son, was married to the former Marie Prout of Newton in June of 1942. Mrs. Kirby and her son are living in Newton for the duration."

This is the first word received by the judge since his son was reported missing.

This week's episode of Seeing to Lead-Perspective Matters

Dr. Chris Jones has a conversation with Viki Wilson, who has been an educator for over 30 years. They discuss how to be effective educators when merging institutions. How to keep a positive and impactful environment through a difficult transition period.
Climate Can-Do: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Everything we throw away contributes to polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink! We can minimize the amount of pollution by using a simple method: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Reduce Is first. It's the most important! To reduce the waste we produce, we reduce the number of products we purchase. Not only will being mindful of your purchases reduce the amount of waste on our planet, but it will also save you a a lot of money.

Reuse: Another way to help our environment is reusing the items and products that we might have thrown away unconsciously. Instead of tossing that shirt you no longer wear, donate it to someone who would wear it. Instead of purchasing a case of plastic water bottles, invest in a reusable water bottle. They are environment friendly and will keep your beverage cold.

Recycle: Recycling stops our trash from wrecking the environment. You would be surprised by the number of things that can be recycled, from mattresses to batteries; metal scraps to clothing and textiles. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection provides a search bar on their website where you can type the name of a waste item and it will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences explains: "Waste, and how we choose to handle it, affects our world's environment. The environment is everything around you including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things. The waste we create has to be carefully controlled to be sure that it does not harm your environment and your health." The best way we can help protect our environment and health is to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

Whitman Summer Concerts

Throughout June and July, the Whitman Cultural Council hosted a series of concerts on Thursday nights at 6p in Whitman Park. Whitman community members brought out their chairs and blankets to enjoy the outdoors and free live music. Each concert had several food and drink options available to enjoy, such as lemonade, grilled cheese, tacos, and ice cream. We would like to thank The Corvairs, Defenders Drum & Bugle Corps, Bak-ta-Bak, Uncommon Soul, and GinaMark for performing for our community, as well as the Cultural Council for making these concerts possible!

Stumbling Forward.

"The only person that ever stumbles is a guy moving forward. You don't stumble backwards; you stumble forward, and you never stumble when you're stationary. So don't worry about stumbling. Keep pushing it forward. ~ James Carville

"There's so much happenstance, so many accidents - stumbling into something and finding it interesting and living with it over time and building on it. It's okay to work from doubt. You need to be willing to not know.": ~ Ellen Gallagher

"In the end, it all comes to choices to turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones."
~ Amber Frey

"Failing is what we do, or stumbling is what we do on a daily basis." ~ Sandra Bullock
Stumbling is DEFINITELY what I do ... maybe even daily. Somehow making order out of the messy world around me; and there is always someone, usually a masculine- type human, who pretends they are in charge. As I stumble on past, they stick out their foot, not necessarily on purpose. But the result is the same.

As I wipe the pie off my face .. I think, "Why are they in charge? They cant seem to keep their feet to themselves." And " Tying my shoelaces together seemed logical at the time."
Stumble on, dear folks, it's the only way we are going to get anywhere : ) ~ Jacquie
