Live The adventure! By Bob Bitchin | |
|
It was the eleventh day of an eight-day crossing. We’d left Pago-Pago on a beautiful sunny day with 15 knots of wind and almost glassy seas. It looked to be a perfect departure.
By the afternoon the wind had shifted around. Any guesses to which direction? You got it. Right outta where we wanted to go. Lovely!
As the hours progressed into days, the wind's velocity changed. Once again, class, wanna guess? Yup, you got it again. They were inching up on 35 knots, right on our nose.
On the fourth day we noticed our GPS was starting to be off. No question. We were making seven knots headway by sailing about 33 degrees off the wind (and off our course). But the silly electrical doodad was saying we were only doing about three knots. Silly gadget. Never did trust ‘em.
But the next day, on our noon-sight, it was confirmed. We had made just 85 miles in

Mike's Fence Fandango!
If it was easy everyone would be doin' it!
| | |
|
|
So last weekend my buddy Mike rode over from Paradise so we could take a little ride up to Bucks Lake. BUT (don'tcha hate that word!) he forgot his phone, so when he arrived at my gate, he didn't have the code. Being a biker of average intellegence, instead of riding 30 miles back to Paradise, he figured he'd just by-pass the gate.
And that's how I found a couple hundred pounds of sweating biker at my door, after he walked up the 1/2 mile road to our house!
Then we had all kinds of fun getting his beautiful Indian out of the ditch his back tire had dug, using my Kubota tractor... And then it was off for a great 100 mile round trip ride up to see Todd at the Buck's Lake Lodge (see "US Bikers" in this issue...).
To top it off, after leaving my place to ride home, his bike broke down on the way (still without a phone!). Sometimes ya gotta just say WTF!

The Sail To The Sun ICW Rally
A 1095 Mile Month Long Party!
By Oscar O'Neil.
| | |
A two month long floating party! You’d be forgiven if you thought Bitchin’ was behind this--but no, it’s the Sail to the Sun ICW Rally, an annual 1095 nautical mile fun run down the east coast Intracoastal Waterway, or ICW.
The party animal behind this joyride is Wally Moran, who has been conducting the Sail to the Sun ICW Rally for ten years now. Each rally comprises from 12 - 16 boats traveling from Hampton VA, to Miami FL.
For most of the Rally participants, it’s their first time heading south and they are looking for the reassurance of a competent leader to help them get safely south. Moran fits the bill, having done the ICW some 48 times. As well, he writes about it and lectures about the trip at boat shows and yacht clubs from Toronto to Annapolis to Miami.
According to Moran, “A lot of people aren’t sure what to expect and they’ve heard so many horror stories about the ICW, they start out intimidated. As a result, they just don’t enjoy that part of the trip. Joining the Rally changes all that.”

One of the best times to ride the High Sierra Mountains is June, and I suppose it was no accident that Street Vibrations in the /Virginia City/Carson City area is set for that time!
And so it was we find Bob & Jody with their friends, Ray and Trudy Payne, sittin’ on their Harleys, riding through one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
The ride from Berry Creek, CA to Virginia City, NV is only a couple hundred miles, but is all thru the High Sierras. Sequoias rising hundreds of feet and, even in June, there was still some snow to make it even more beautiful.
Once we arrived, we headed up the street to the Virginia City Inn. It sits at the outskirts of the small town and was perfect, even affordable!!
The streets started filling up Friday afternoon, and by Saturday AM, the streets were packed. The town itself is a perfect place for an event like this. It is still a one street town out of the old west.
Mark Twain started his career here, and his old

Grand Bay - A Treb Lincoln Adventure
What happens when a 300 pound tattooed ex-biker turned sea captain runs into trouble while sailing in Mexico? Ya really wanna know? Grand Bay follows some friends as they discover a drug smuggling operation and one of their own is kidnapped. Action packed and never boring, this is one of three Treb Lincoln novels now available.
Here's A Sample Partial Chapter:
Treb walked into the hospital to check on Chuck. It had been almost twenty-four hours since they’d hit the rocks, and Chuck was going to be released.

New Years In Acapulco!
So, as it turns out, as we sailed south to Panama on our way to Europe, we pulled into Acapulco for a little R&R. We happened to be there on New Years Eve, and we figured we'd go to one of the waterfront restaurants for the celebration.
And so we find a tequila soaked Captain finding ways to stick all kinds of things in his "head holes." (no one ever said he was very bright!)
The big surprise came at midnight when they set off the fireworks. Ya see, they set them off right over the Restaurant. And only about 50 feet over said restaurant. The problem?? Hot fireworks were falling into our drinks, our hair, and it was quite comical watching a few hundred people putting out fires in each other's hair. No, there's no picture of that. We were kinda busy! LOL!!

Coppercoat
The 10 Year High-Perfomance Anti-Fouling System
| |
|
Coppercoat is possibly the most powerful and long lasting anti-fouling available today. Developed in the 1980’s and available to the public since 1991, it is successfully protecting tens of thousands of boats the world over, saving their owners the time and expense of annual re-antifouling.
Coppercoat uses only copper of over 99% purity - this guarantees the maximum possible production of the powerful anti-fouling agent cuprous oxide.
Tests show that in products using less pure copper, or weaker alloys such as copper nickel, antifouling performance is substantially reduced (due to the slower release rate and lower overall production of cuprous oxide).
The average customer worldwide gets about 10 years of protection before they need to do their first touch-ups. That doesn't mean that 10 years is a magic number and you absolutely must do a touch-up; if you are in a mild fouling location it might be 12 years or more before you need to do anything. And if you are in a high fouling area and using an aggressive pad to clean the waterline it might be only 9 years.

Heidi's cruising Dishes
Recipe From The Galley of SV Sonho, Currently Cruising Mexico
By Our Galley Queen Heidi Benson
Nopales Salad
| |
Nothing says Mexico like cactus! But have you tried eating it? I’m cruising in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico, and enjoy trying the local fruits and veggies so nopales (cactus leaves) piqued my interest.
You can find prickly pear cactus leaves readily in any market in Mexico and it’s also available in Mexican markets in the United States. It’s inexpensive and is sold as whole leaves with the spiky needles removed. Look for leaves that are thick and firm, without cracked or soft spots, and are medium to dark green. Use within a few days or refrigerate for up to two weeks.
- They taste similar to a slightly tart green bean when eaten raw, and a bit like

This Months Special - Bob Bitchin Store
The Engel 35
$100.00 Off The best damn cooler around!!
| | |
We have tested this cooler for 30 years! First, on our boat as we cruised the world (coldest beer mid-ocean using just 7 amps!). The real test came when our freezer conked out halfway across the Pacific. We turned the Engel down to freezing, and it saved our frozen food! AND! After that, we started working the boat shows for the next 27 years, and guess what.. the same Engle we used on the boat worked in our truck (during transport) and in the booth for cold sodas and beer! When Captain Woody sailed around the world, we gave him our old Engel 16, and he used it for that voyage and for years afterwards. They NEVER STOP. Best damn coolers we've ever seen. And this month, thru the 31st of July, get $100 off!
Since 1962, well over three million Engel Portable Fridge-Freezers have been manufactured and sold all over the world. From Australia and Africa to Europe and the USA, campers, caravanners, four wheel drivers, truckies, and boat owners have relied on Engel products for their enjoyment and pleasure.
