Hello Everyone! Welcome back to another Friday blog. Today's focus is on human chromosome 2. Why? It is the chromosome that makes us human and differentiates us from other great apes - and is the focus and drug-directed target of nearly all the chronic diseases we face today. Chromosome 2 codes for 1,346 protein-coding genes that control embryonic development, immune function and metabolic function.
The human genome project began in 1990 and was completed in 2003 revealing we have roughly 20,000 - 25,000 protein-coding genes - nearly the exact same number as the other great apes. This was a big surprise as we are profoundly more complex - yet we share a 98.8% identical genetic code.
