Bespoke Flood Resilience Data Packages Now Available Upon Request

In addition to the non-regulatory flood hazard, impact and asset data that can be accessed online through the Coastal Resilience Web Explorer and the Flood Resilience Open Data Portal, DCR is now offering custom data packages tailored to stakeholders’ individual needs. Data packages can include hazard data for coastal, rainfall and riverine flooding. They also show flood impacts to buildings and critical infrastructure, land and natural infrastructure and people and communities. This data can be used in local and regional planning efforts to identify at-risk areas, understand flood patterns and trends and quantify risk in economic terms.

For more information, check out this one-pager, available on the Flood Resilience Planning Resources webpage.

Putting ORP's Resilience Data to Work in Saxis

Resilience planning often requires significant time to collect, organize and analyze data. For the Town of Saxis, access to a custom resilience data package from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Office of Resilience Planning (ORP) allowed the project team to spend less time building datasets and more time identifying solutions.

Located along the Chesapeake Bay on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Saxis is a low-lying coastal community where flooding, erosion and sea-level rise increasingly affect residents and businesses. The Town is developing a Coastal Adaptation and Resilience Plan in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, funded by the Community Flood Preparedness Fund.

To support this effort, the Town requested a custom data package from ORP based on the Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Plan, Phase II. Although many datasets are available through ORP’s online tools, custom data packages provide additional detail tailored to local planning needs. The package included flood impacts to buildings, roads and critical assets under present and future coastal, rainfall and riverine flood conditions. This study-area-specific information gave the project team a more detailed understanding of local flood risk.

The Town’s consultant integrated the ORP data into their planning scenarios, which illustrate how flooding conditions and associated risks may change over time and affect community assets. This analysis builds awareness and will help inform actionable resilience projects for the Town’s Resilience Plan.

Saxis demonstrates how ORP's investments in data can help communities move more efficiently from risk assessment to resilience action. By building on the ORP datasets, Saxis can devote more grant resources to developing community-driven strategies and engaging with stakeholders in refining the plan.
