Happy Women's History Month!
March is Women’s History Month.

I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the hardworking, dedicated women of the Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement is not a traditional career choice among women, and the choice to become a part of this profession is a calling regardless of gender.

As a Sheriff’s office, we benefit from a more gender-balanced, diverse workforce, and are very proud of the diversity and inclusion in our workforce. However, the number of women in our department and across all law enforcement remains small and the pace of increase slow.

Our new Sheriff's Alliance for Equity (SAFE) initiative creates more paths for inclusion, advancement and promotion across the department for people of all races, identities and genders.

Captain Stephanie Colmenero is a 30-year SFSO veteran, role model and a mentor to many deputies coming through the ranks. As she tells us in the video below, serving in the Sheriff's Office has "taught me a lot about myself -- things I didn't think I could do or maybe I didn't know I could do until I came here."

Today's hires are tomorrow's future leaders. It's time to recommit ourselves to sustaining and expanding workforce equity and diversity.

Sheriff Miyamoto Proposes New Budget
As the Sheriff’s Office plans for Fiscal Years 2021-22 and 2022-23, we are pleased to have closed the gap on a projected $14 million budget deficit related to our department’s COVID response and informed by our mission to protect public safety.

We’ve lowered expenses by assessing our core activities and evaluating what we need to do over the three to five years to sustain and fulfill our mission. The changing jail landscape means increased investment in supervising people in court-ordered alternatives to incarceration.

We’ve also implemented new communication protocols to expedite information to the Courts regarding an individual's history of compliance with court orders. We want the community to be safe, which means holding offenders accountable and offering them opportunities to change their behavior while in the justice system.
Accountability, Transparency & Financial Justice

The Sheriff’s Office success in lowering expenses supports our need to add staff for new voter and City-driven initiatives promoting accountability, transparency and financial justice.

Specifically, the Sheriff’s Office is requesting two positions to support the new Office of Inspector General, oversight created through a November 2020 voter-approved ballot initiative.

We are also asking for additional personnel to manage our expanded body-worn camera (BWC) program. This includes staff for BWC footage storage, retention and release operations as well as ongoing compliance with BWC state legislation.
Sheriff's Alliance for Equity

In 2020, I launched the Sheriff’s Alliance for Equity (SAFE) to tackle the big issues of racial and gender equality. SAFE is made up of Sheriff’s staff representing a cross section of race, ethnicity, gender and age. Our plan is a wholesale cultural shift and supports legislation requiring City departments to designate employees as racial equity leaders.

While the Sheriff’s Office boasts the City’s most diverse public safety workforce, diversity does not guarantee inclusion. Employees must feel welcomed and included at every stage of their employment. Our request to add staff in support of this initiative prioritizes our shared humanity and commitment to organizational change.
Justice Reform

In August 2020, San Francisco became the first county in the nation to make all phone calls from jail free, eliminating an expense that disproportionately affects low-income people and communities of color.

My budget moves the cost for phone service from the people in our custody to the City’s general fund. We have proposed a new line item in our budget to cover free phone calls and advance financial justice.
