Letter from the President of ACVA
by Professor Charlotte Benson (Jyoti Devi) President, ACVA
September 2023 Edition
Dear Friends of ACVA,
We hope this edition of The Comet finds you and your families doing well. Thank Heavens that long hot summer is finally over! Here in Arizona where I live, it’s still warm, but the worst is over. So now we can cool down a bit and get back to studying Jyotish. I spent some time in mid-September sky-gazing in hopes of seeing Comet Nishimura but couldn’t spot it. Since comets are considered Dhum Ketus in Jyotisha, it will be interesting to see which world leader may succumb to its visit to our solar system.
We hope that you enjoy the valuable content in this issue. One article is particularly relevant during this back-to-school season, written long ago by the late Vice President of ACVA, dear scholarly Jessica Sayles.

EDUCATION: Summary of Findings of a Group of Larning Disabled Students
By Late Vice President of ACVA, Jessica Sayles, M.A., M.S.
An evaluation of 128 students, ranging in age between 5 through 11, born in the years 1977 through 1989, with most of them born between 1983 and 1987. The source of the birth data is the birth certificate. The
students attended an urban public school system. All of these students experienced serious learning problems, usually starting when they entered school.
In using this group of students, it is the intent to show which of the houses 2, 4, or 5 has the greatest influence on education (vidtrya). in the evaluation of charts of children experiencing significant learning problems often already noticeable in kindergarten, it should be possible to determine which house is most negatively impacted by planetary influences, affecting the ability to acquire skills in the school setting.

BARBIE’S WOMEN – A PLAY IN FOUR PARTS
By Dr. Lynn Bootes, MD
ACVA Dean of Students and Registrar
This article first appeared in the September 2023 issue of AstroLogic online magazine and is shared here courtesy of editor Victoria Belue.
Here is some light-hearted fun from the recent hit movie Barbie. The recent smash hit movie has provoked memories and discussions across genders and generations. Oddly enough, Barbie the doll has a birth chart! In Vedic Astrology we call this a Muhurta – a time chosen for the beginning of an event, a company, or a marriage. Then we will move on to the birth chart of Barbie’s creator, Ruth Handler, who is seen briefly in idealized form in two scenes in the move. And representing the third generation, writer-director Greta Gertwig and producer-star Margot Robbie. Be advised, there are no birth times in the public record for Handler and Gertwig, so I have made my best guess. And of course, it seems unlikely that the “birth time” of Barbie’s debut was chosen with Vedic astrology in mind. This month I will not go into as much depth on the four charts but hit the highlights of what we see in the way of beauty, ambition, and talent in the arts.

Gola – September 2023
By Julene Louis,
Jyotish Ratna, Jyotish Visharada, ISAR-CAP
ACVA Curriculum Coordinator
Gola is the observational astronomy limb of Jyotish. Throughout autumn we can observe Shukra, Guru and Shani. Shukra will be visible in the morning sky. Guru will rise after sunset and be visible in the morning until its opposition with Surya in early November. At which point Guru will be visible from dusk until dawn. Meanwhile Shani will shift from all night visibility to evening visibility. Mangala is travelling too close to Surya to be observed this autumn. Budha is visible in the morning until early October. It becomes an evening planet in November however the low slant of the ecliptic will make it difficult to observe amid the evening twilight.
Autumn commences with Shani visible in the east-southeast at sunset in the constellation Aquarius, Kumbha rashi, and Shatabisha nakshatra where the graha will remain throughout the season. Sadalamelik (above Shani in Aquarius) and Formulhaut (below Shani in Pisces Austrinus) mark Shatabisha. Shani will travel westward or retrograde away from these stars until its direct station in early November just below Sadalmelik. At this point Shani will become visible in the south-southeast at sunset. In December we can begin to observe its forward motion as moves eastward away from Sadalmelik and becomes visible in the south-southwest at sunset.

The Observatory
September 2023 EQUINOX EDITION
Dr. Lynn Bootes, MD
ACVA Dean of Students and Registrar
registrar@acvaonline.org
Dear Readers,
Welcome to Fall in the Northern Hemisphere and Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. This time of rapid seasonal change always brings adjustments, but we can always help ourselves and our clients by aligning with all the other changes of Lunar Cycles, Eclipses, and changes in the paths of the planets. September closes out with a relative lack of planetary news after the Equinox on September 23.
Early October – Planetary Scene-Shifting. Be ready for change in the first week of October as Mercury, Venus and Mars all move to the next Rashi (Zodiac Sign). Mars conjoins Ketu on October 4th, and on October 9th he makes a Vedic special 1:4 aspect to Pluto at 4d30 Capricorn. While not all Jyotishas use the outer planets, those who do will want to pay special attention to dramatic power plays.
Mid October – Annular Solar Eclipse affecting a Gandantha point. The maximum will be October 14 at 1:55 pm EDT in the USA, and it will be visible (but not totally dark) in the Western United States. Be sure to use eye protection if you choose to view. Sun and Moon will be at 26d28 Pisces, but the Lunar Nodes, Rahu and Ketu will be at 0d41 Aries and 0d41 Libra, respectively.
