Thursday Meeting This Week Features Peter Greenberg

Peter Greenberg, the CBS News travel editor and author of "The Travel Detective," will be the featured speaker at the regular Thursday meeting this week. However, he will be speaking at The Westport Library at 7:00 pm (a change from the regular Thursday morning meeting).

To learn more about this very special guest, watch a brief video about him ("Peter Greenberg Worldwide Sizzle Reel") by clicking here.

Greenberg -- whose website offers a wide array of resources for travelers and industry insiders -- will be in conversation with longtime friend, colleague, worldwide traveler and Y's Man Allen Swerdlowe.

Through their dialogue you’ll get a feel for what it was like to report the news at the most politically active college campus during the turbulent 1960s.

Tickets are $20.00 and can be obtained on the library website: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-evening-with-peter-greenberg-the-travel-detective-tickets-1432093302619

Last Thursday's Speaker Looked at Finance Technology Future

Annelise Osborne
Kadena Chief Business Officer, Annelise Osborne of Westport, gave Y’s Men her insights on digital finance at Thursday’s meeting. Having a quarter century on Wall Street, Osborne said digital finance, driven by technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence, will make financial systems faster, more affordable, and more secure, not replace traditional banking. She emphasized that blockchain is already used by major banks for back-office transactions, enabling instant settlements and efficient processes.

Osborne highlighted three key lessons for members.
First, blockchain and digital assets form an efficient infrastructure for finance. Stablecoins and tokenized assets can make transfers and settlements immediate. That helps both individuals and large institutions.
Second, while crypto-related headlines often focus on fraud or volatility, the real risks are from poorly managed companies, not the technology.
Third, the rise of programmable and traceable financial transactions means increased transparency and security; crypto leaves a digital fingerprint, making illicit activity easier to track than cash, a fact valued by regulators worldwide.

Non-Fiction Book Club Meets October 15

The Y's Men Non-Fiction Book Club will be discussing "Who is Government" by Michael Lewis when it meets on Wednesday, October 15 at 2:00 pm in room 109 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

Save the dates for two Club meetings in December. The first will be on Wednesday, December 10, and the second a week later on Wednesday, December 17.

The December 10 meeting will be a discussion of "Apollo 13" by James Lovell which was previously announced for an earlier date. On December 17, the Club will discuss "American Rascal," a biography of Jay Gould by Greg Steinmetz. The meeting will be held at Lyndhurst, Jay Gould's estate in Tarrytown, NY, and author Steinmetz will attend. There may be a modest cost to attend so the Club may be asking for an intention to attend by the end of October. Stay tuned for details.

Y's Men Current Events Discussion Group Meets Weekly

A small group of Y's men meet weekly to discuss topics of mutual interest inspired by current events. That's the Y's Men Current Events Discussion Group.

There are two separate groups that meet on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Saugatuck Congregational Church at 10:00 am for an hour-long discussion.

The topic for discussion is selected by consensus at the previous meeting. Each of the two separate groups is limited to seven members so everyone attending can actively participate in the discussion. An additional Monday group may be added should there be sufficient demand.

Anyone interested in learning more about the Current Events Group or in joining it should contact Y's Man Tony Pranzo at tpranzo@yahoo.com.
