New Member Spotlight: Clarence Hayes interviewed new member Rick Honey for this week’s spotlight:

Rick Honey

Born in 1947, Rick grew up in a small upstate New York town of just 2,500 people. He graduated from high school in 1966, where he was an all-sport athlete and served as student council president. In 1970, he pursued his interest in writing and earned a BA in English from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

After college, Rick worked as a counselor at a Boys Club in an inner-city Pittsburgh neighborhood for two years. At a friend’s suggestion, he moved to Ridgefield, CT, where he held various odd jobs while trying to break into the newspaper business. He approached the publisher of four weekly newspapers in the area and managed to get a shot as a reporter, thus launching a seven-year career in local journalism that culminated in his role as editor of The Redding Pilot.

Rick transitioned from local newspapers, serving as an editor of Patient Care—a magazine for physicians—from 1979 to 1981, before moving into corporate communications, a field in which he remained until retirement. He spent two years at St. Regis Paper Company before joining Pfizer in 1983.

When Pfizer spun off its minerals business in 1992, Rick followed the Pfizer CFO to join Minerals Technologies Inc., an R&D company focused on producing a variety of minerals used in different industrial products and processes. For more than 25 years, he managed investor relations, corporate communications, media relations, internal communications, and occasional political lobbying, becoming a corporate officer in 2001. During that time the company grew revenues from $350 million to $2.2 billion under four different CEOs.

In 2004, Rick moved from New York City to Weston. He has three grandchildren in Westport who keep him on this toes!

A voracious reader who now writes simply for pleasure, Rick eagerly looks forward to forging new friendships and taking part in Y's Men activities.

We thank these Y’s Men who have referred new members during this fiscal year!
