Y's Man George Kalan Helped
Bring Apollo 13 Astronauts Home
| | |
The Apollo 13 Astronauts.
In April 1970, an oxygen tank exploded aboard Apollo 13, crippling the spacecraft and putting three astronauts’ lives in peril.
Among the team that worked around the clock to bring them safely home was Y's Man George Kalan.
He first revealed his behind-the-scenes role during a Y’s Men hike earlier this year, astonishing fellow hikers.
At their urging, and after weeks of research to ensure accuracy, Kalan now shares this remarkable, exclusive to Y’s Men, firsthand account at this Thursday morning's regular Y's Men Meeting.

Katie Wheeler of SWCAA addresses Y's Men at last Thursday's meeting.
Y's Men were pleased to welcome Katie Wheeler, CHOICES Manager at the Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging (SWCAA), last Thursday to speak about Navigating Medicare. She provided timely and relevant information and clarity on issues facing subscribers during the Medicare enrollment period.
Katie walked us through the challenge of analyzing respective Connecticut programs for Medicare C, Gap and Advantage, and Medicare D, prescription drugs, including such varying factors as deductibles, in-network providers and pharmacies, and coverage for specific drugs at covered pharmacies.
Among other things, she noted that the (in)famous "donut" known to so many of us earlier this century, has been filled, and that Medicare D providers can change terms in the middle of a contract year. She recommended registering at Medicare.gov to help find the program best suited to your specific needs.
While this is the busiest time of year, you can reach SWCAA by phone at 1-800-994-9422, and expect a response within four business days.
The following link takes you to her slides and will provide much more valuable information.
