Powering through - Electrical challenges in Canada

Coquitlam, BC – Electrical Technician Armando Garcia embarked on a two-and-a-half-hour journey from Burlington, WA to Coquitlam, BC, to pay a visit to our friends at International Web exPress. He set out to address pressing electrical issues with a problematic Press system. This busy full-service commercial print shop runs a 3 Tower Tensor Press with a Two High and a Tensor H-50 Folder. The Press has 5 zero-speed splicers and is outfitted with DCOS automation that keeps their waste low even with the short runs. Two of the towers are topped off with conventional UV systems. They have a 250 HP AC system complimented by a 150 HP DC system, which runs in the torque follower mode as a helper most often but can also run as the lead drive when necessary.

Upon arrival, Armando teamed up with Web Express Pressroom Manager Noel McDermott to troubleshoot several concerns:

• The Press randomly halted due to issues with the dampener feed.
• The 150HP DC drive's safe ready lights were non-functional.
• The Press occasionally entered a safe state during inching without resetting.

The two men traced the stop circuit wiring and discovered a redundant safety stop circuit in the AC drive that demanded a full reset. They decided to bypass this circuit, restoring the Press to its original operational state. They then focused on the console’s malfunctioning safe and ready circuits, identifying PLC output failures caused by the selector panel. Armando installed an auxiliary relay and re-wired the circuits, resolving the issues.

For future precautions, Armando designed additional circuits with timers to simplify installation and uploaded a backup PLC program to safeguard against similar problems. Before leaving, he recommended installing a snubber on the main drive to prevent any further issues for this bustling Print business.
